Respiratory Therapist
Respiratory therapist job at Northwell Health
Provides respiratory therapy as prescribed by a Physician. Prepares, operates and maintains respiratory care equipment.
Job Responsibility
Ensures accurate and complete Physician prescription.
Compares prescription requests with medical record order form and ensures information is complete.
Clarifies any discrepancies with Physician and provides patient/significant other with respiratory education.
Provides prescribed respiratory therapy.
Performs vital capacity, inspiratory force and peak flow measurements; administers various oxygen concentrations, aerosol medication devices and mechanical ventilators; monitors oxygen supported ambulation; performs chest physical therapy (cupping and coughing); provides nasotracheal or artificial airway suctioning.
Performs intubation and arterial blood gas puncture and delivers for analysis; documents all activities and patient outcomes/responses per policy and procedure.
Maintains mechanical ventilators and respiratory therapy equipment.
Tests ventilators for functioning of monitors, oxygen blenders, alarms and leaks.
Conducts quick extended and/or short self-test on ventilators.
Remedies all leaks and replaces defective equipment; troubleshoots mechanical problems by performing minor repairs and calibrations.
Reports major equipment problems to management.

Job Qualification
Associate's Degree required, or equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Current License to practice as a Respiratory Therapist in New York State, and Current Respiratory Therapist (NBRC) Certification in New York State required, plus specialized certifications as needed.
1-3 years of relevant experience, required.
PFT experience, preferred.
Bilingual Spanish, preferred.

Compensation Statement

Demonstrate competency to perform the following pulmonary function testing procedures: spirometry, lung volumes, diffusing capacity, fraction of exhaled nitric oxide testing, impulse oscillometry, simple pulmonary stress test, cardiopulmonary exercise stress test (CPET), methacholine challenge test (MCT) sputum induction, arterial blood gas, maximum inspiratory and expiratory pressure, maximum voluntary ventilation, and other tests as assigned.
Perform daily calibration of all pulmonary function equipment as required.
Act as biological control for pulmonary function equipment.
Demonstrate the ability to perform preventative monthly maintenance and trouble shoot equipment.
Demonstrate clinical competency in evaluation, analysis, and interpretation of data obtained from diagnostic and physiologic tests.
Demonstrate competency in performance criteria of Medication and Medical Gas Administration: Proper use of metered dose inhalers, peak flow meters, Oxygen, Nitric Oxide etc.
Demonstrate competency in performance criteria of handling medical gas cylinders.
Demonstrate the ability to administer bronchodilators and educate patient on the usage of metered dose inhalers and other medication delivery devices.
Demonstrate competency in use of electronic medical record - documentation, order sets, etc.
Act as a liaison to facilitate training of staff and the development of testing protocols.
Perform inventory check.
Demonstrate the ability to be involved in research studies involving performing pulmonary function testing.
Communicate with scheduler and other personnel to facilitate in-patient testing and clarification of clinical aspects of testing.
Confirm testing instructions e.g. CPETs and MCT for adequate patient preparation.
Adhere to department's policies and procedures.
Maintain cleanliness and safe work environment.
Perform other related duties.
Demonstrate clinical competency performance in ETT placement and securing airway. Suctioning ETT, including closed system suctioning, open system with sterile technique.
Demonstrate Ventilator and BiPAP/CPAP setup and management.
