NLC, led by its three founders—Gerald McKie, Aaron Howell, and Shane Porter—launched its first class August 4, 1993 at a rented lumber yard in Meridian, Idaho.
Since 1993, NLC has grown to over 300 employees with 4 campus locations across the United States.
1998 - Northwest Lineman College begins researching and authoring a comprehensive curriculum composed of topics related to the power delivery industry.
The project would continue until 2002.
2002 - Lineworker Certification Program established for power companies seeking journey-level certification for their lineworkers.
2003 - Campus expansion project increases facility square footage from 6,000 square feet (560 m) to 24,000 square feet (2,200 m). Lab facility is added.
On November 6, 2006, 42 ELP students showed up for the first day of class and the campus has continued to grow since.
2006 - Acreage purchased increasing land space from 14 acres (57,000 m) to 31.
2006 - First branch campus is opened in Oroville, California.
2007 - Utility Training Services department established providing customized training programs for utility companies worldwide.
Alan’s remarkable career culminated in the completion of two of the most exhaustive books in existence on the history of linemen: “The American Lineman” and “The American Lineman: Spanning The Strait.” He also had the honor of being inducted into the International Lineman Hall of Fame in 2008.
In 2008, NLC held its first annual Crystal Awards ceremony and it was a huge success.
Since 2010, several hundred lineworkers have graduated from the program and have built power lines in Tanzania.
2010 - Second branch campus is opened in Denton, Texas.
In 2012, NLC decided to invest in developing and manufacturing safety and educational tools for the trade.
The product is licensed to Buckingham Manufacturing and launched in fall 2013.
2016 - Third branch campus is opened in Edgewater, Florida.
2018- In January 2018, Northwest Lineman College was acquired by Quanta Services.
In 2019, NLC added new entry-level career programs to its offerings: Natural Gas Technician Program and Telecommunications Lineworker Program.
