Northwest Local School District company history timeline

1927

Monfort Heights School District, located in Green Township covers 7.36 miles, was started in 1927 by combining one two-room and two one-room schools.

1948

Public meetings, held in the first four of these communities on the night of November 18, 1948, approved a consolidation program by overwhelming majorities.

Election plans were worked out at this meeting and on December 8, 1948, at elections held simultaneously in Roanoke, Rhome, Haslet, and Justin, consolidation was voted in almost unanimously.

1950

On February 22, 1950, O.A. Peterson, president of the district, turned the first spade of dirt in formal ceremonies held appropriately on the birthday of the Father of Our Country.

The district began to expand rapidly in the late 1950’s when many people moved into the northwestern area of the county.

1956

Northwest High School opened in 1956 as one of the most modern in the area.

1958

The school district continued to grow, and by 1958 there were 3603 pupils and 113 teachers at the Poole Road site.

1959

Struble Elementary was built in 1959 and was named in honor of Clarence Struble, the first superintendent of the Colerain Centralized School District.

1960

In 1960, the Colerain Centralized School District changed its name to the Northwest Local School District.

Taylor Elementary was built in 1960 and named in honor of Harry Taylor.

1961

White Oak Middle School was built in 1961 and named after the community in which it resides - “White Oak.”

1965

Ann Weigel was built in 1965 and was named in honor of Ann Weigel, a teacher who taught in the district for 46 years.

1966

Houston Elementary was built in 1966 and named in honor of Ophelia Houston, a long time teacher of the district.

1969

Pleasant Run Middle School was built in 1969 and was named after the community in which it resides.

1970

Bevis was built in 1970 and was named after the owner of the property it sits on.

1973

Northwest High School was built in 1973 and given the district name.

1977

Welch Elementary School was built in 1977 and was named in honor of Everett J. Welch, Assistant Superintendent.

1999

The new Monfort Heights Elementary opened in 1999.

2008

With declining district enrollment, Houston Elementary was closed in 2008.

2010

Northwest Local School District opened an Alternative Program called Northwest Passage in 2010.

2013

Due to declining enrollment, Bevis Elementary closed in 2013.
