Northwest University company history timeline

1934

Northwest University was founded by the Northwest Ministry Network of the Assemblies of God and opened to students on October 1, 1934.

1946

Northwest College opened in 1946 with nearly 100 full- and part-time students and three instructors who met in classrooms borrowed from the public school district.

1949

In 1949, Ness resigned from his position.

1952

By 1952, the Accrediting Association of Bible Colleges gave full accreditation to Northwest Bible College, and the United States Department of Education recognized them as a school of higher learning.

They started a campus fund in 1952 with $112.41.

1958

However, in 1958, the Department of Health, Education and Welfare awarded Northwest Bible College twenty-two and one-thirds acres at no cost.

1959

Classes began on September 28, 1959, and within a few years the campus had expanded to women and men's dormitories, a cafeteria, a student center, and a gymnasium.

1966

Despite gaining national prominence under Graham, the college temporarily closes in 1966 for restructuring and relocation.

1972

Guided by the leadership and faith of William B. Berntsen, the college reopens in 1972 on its current St Paul campus and begins to expand.

1984

1984 marked the 50 year anniversary of Northwest.

Northwest College also extended a 20-year lease to the Seattle Seahawks team in 1984 on a 12-acre (49,000 m) plot of undeveloped land on the west side of campus.

1996

In 1996, Northwest College began offering an adult degree completion program called Leadership Education for Adult Professionals (LEAP). Many adults with a high school diploma have the desire to get their college education but do not have the time or money to do so.

1999

Northwest University announced the opening of the Mark and Huldah Buntain College of Nursing in 1999.

2001

In 2001, President Argue received word from the Northwest Association of Schools and Colleges (now the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities) that Northwest could offer its first master's degree.

2003

Since March 2003, NWU has been jointly administered by the Ministry of Education and the Shaanxiprovincial government.

2004

The Getty Foundation awarded Northwestern a generous Campus Heritage Grant in 2004 which led to extensive research on our historic buildings and the development of a preservation plan for them.

In 2004, the Board of Directors decided to change the name of the college from Northwest College to Northwest University.

2013

In 2013, LEAP was renamed and expanded into the College of Adult and Professional Studies (CAPS). CAPS includes the Adult Evening Program, Church Partnership Program, Criminal Justice Program, Southern Idaho Extension Site, and Online Programs.

2018

The Church Partnership Program is now being called Northwest Partnership Program, as of 2018.

2019

And Carley Kendrick, President of SBC, has shown the heart of a true servant in this entire process.” In 2019 the Salem Bible College of Northwest University had its name changed to NU Oregon.
