Norwich company history timeline

1801

By 1801 the city had six large breweries, supplying local needs, as well as sending beer to London for sale.

1804

In 1804 a dispensary was opened where the poor could obtain free medicines.

1806

In 1806 an act of parliament formed a body of men called the Improvement Commissioners who had powers to pave, clean, and light the streets.

1823

The first Jarrold's shop here was established in 1823, opposite the current premises.

1835

1836

The first police force in Norwich was formed in 1836.

St James Mill On the north bank of the River Wensum stands a huge brick building, erected in 1836 as a textile mill on the site of a 13th-century Carmelite friary.

1844

Norwich originally had three railway stations, but only Thorpe Station, which was opened in 1844, remains today.

1852

Chapelfields was opened as a public park in 1852.

1854

Norwich Free Academy, founded in 1854, continues to provide secondary education for Norwich and surrounding towns.

1857

The first public library opened in 1857.

1877

After 1877 they began slum clearance.

1882

Norwich Catholic Cathedral Built in 1882 under the patronage of Henry Howard, the 15th Duke of Norfolk, not as a cathedral but as a parish church.

1884

The Roman Catholic Cathedral in Norwich was built in 1884.

1886

Mousehold Heath opened as a park in 1886.

1892

In 1892 work began on the church of St John the Baptist, which was later to become the Roman Catholic Cathedral.

Electric trolleys were introduced in 1892.

1894

In 1894 the newly converted Castle Museum & Art Gallery opened and remains to this day.

1897

The arcade was designed by George Skipper (see Jarrold's) and opened in 1897.

1899

The Royal Arcade was opened in 1899 – a beautiful ornate covered shopping street, designed by George Skipper in the Art Nouveau style.

1900

Nevertheless, Norwich did grow during the 19th century and by 1900 it had a population of over 100,000.

Surrey House One of the most amazing office buildings in Britain, Surrey House was designed as the headquarters for the Norwich Union insurance company in 1900, on the site of a 16th-century townhouse owned by the Earl of Surrey.

1907

Mohegan Park, started in 1907 with private donations and purchase, is centered around Spaulding Pond.

1912

The first cinema in Norwich opened in 1912.

1918

Her grave lies just outside a small doorway on the south side of the cathedral itself, but this large memorial was placed in the middle of a roundabout in front of the Maid's Head Inn on 12 October 1918, the 3rd anniversary of her death.

1920

By the 1920’s the Guildhall, which had been the civic headquarters for over five hundred years, was now too small.

1922

James Stuart Garden opened in 1922.

1925

Bridewell Museum opened in 1925.

1929

Woodrow Pilling Park opened in 1929.

1933

Waterloo Park opened in 1933.

Then in 1933 Jarrolds repurchased the mill site, and converted it into an office complex.

1936

The City Hall was built in 1936, to a design by architects Charles Holloway James and Stephen Rowland Pierce.

1938

The City Hall was built in 1938.

1945

Many more were built after 1945.

1951

City government was reorganized as a council/manager form in 1951.

1963

Norwich University was founded in 1963.

1976

Raised to cathedral status in 1976, it was designed by George Gilbert Scott and completed by his brother, John Oldrid Scott.

1977

The Arts Centre opened in 1977.

1980

Anglia Square Shopping Centre opened in 1980.

1988

In 1988, in a move to protect one of the area’s greatest natural assets, the Norfolk Broads became a national park.

1990

In the early 1990’s the site of the old cattle market was excavated to house the Castle Mall shopping centre, an innovative scheme, built on several levels, using the medieval street patterns and linking the east and west sides of the city centre.

1993

Castle Mall opened in 1993.

In 1993 the statue was moved to its present location beside the Erpingham Gate.

1999

Riverside Leisure Complex opened in 1999.

2001

In 2001, a charter revision restored the office of Mayor, but retained the city manager.

Formed in 2001 by Bill Stanley and Peg Wilson, the Norwich Historical Society seeks to preserve, protect and promote the rich history of Norwich, CT.

2002

In 2002 a building called The Forum was opened.

2005

Then in 2005, Chapelfield Shopping Centre opened.

2019

The construction of Norwich Cathedral began around the same time as the Norwich Castle and was an enormous undertaking. It recently won the accolade ‘Best Outdoor Market’ in the UK for 2019.
