United Medical Center company history timeline

1964

The Health Professions Education Assistance Act of 1964 funded colleges and universities to build new and expanded facilities and provided loans to students.

1965

Medicare and Medicaid, enacted in 1965, incorporated the prevailing reimbursement policy, thus reinforcing the paradox of incentivizing both the expansion of nonprofit organizations and the commercialization of their pricing behavior.

Moreover, Medicare and Medicaid, established in 1965, provided money for the care of the aged and the poor, respectively.

In 1965, for example, Medicare costs were projected to be $3.1 billion.

1966

Began as 380-bed Morris Cafritz Memorial Hospital in 1966.

1966: What will become Greater Southeast Community Hospital opens.

1970

In 1970, only 1 public academic teaching hospital (serving the University of Oklahoma) was still financed, as were most nonteaching public hospitals around the country, by a state appropriation for each line item in its budget, with all revenue deposited in the state's general income accounts.

Opened a 180-bed nursing home in 1980.

Opened a second facility in Fort Washington Medical Center in 1983.

Medicare incorporated a prospective payment system in 1983, with federal programs paying a preset amount for a specific diagnosis in the form of Diagnostic Related Groups, or DRGs.

1995: Greater Southeast, Children’s National Medical Center, Howard University Hospital, Providence Hospital and Washington Hospital Center form HMO for the city’s Medicaid patients.

Some of the larger not-for-profit corporations have bailed out public facilities through lease arrangements, such as the one between the Daughters of Charity’s Seton Medical Center and the public Brackenridge Hospital in Austin, Texas, that occurred in 1995.

Veritas, a company led by campaign donors to D.C. Mayor Muriel E. Bowser (D), was brought on in April 2016 to stabilize the Southeast hospital.

2017
