Established in 1895, Notre Dame of Maryland University (NDMU) is a private, Catholic institution in Baltimore, Maryland, with the mission to educate leaders to transform the world.
In 1896, the Collegiate Institute became the first four-year Roman Catholic college for women in the United States.
In 1936 Notre Dame approved the Honor Code, an enduring bond between students and faculty.
Notre Dame’s alma mater, written by classmates Lucie B. Collins and Ann Connor of the class of 1952, is a tribute to the pursuit of truth inherent in the Honor Code.
The lower preparatory school (high school in modern terminology) moved from CND's North Charles Street location to its current campus further north in suburban Baltimore County at the county seat of Towson in 1960, and is now known as "Notre Dame Preparatory School (or "Notre Dame Prep" for short).
In 1972 the College began the Continuing Education program, offering women age 25 and older the opportunity to study and earn a bachelor’s degree by attending classes with traditional-age undergraduate students.
In 1975, Notre Dame established the Weekend College to provide conveniently scheduled classes meeting the needs of employed women and men.
In 1984, the Graduate Studies Program began offering master’s degrees to working professionals.
The Accelerated College for working professionals launched in 2003 to provide learning opportunities for student cohorts through partnerships with schools, businesses and healthcare organizations throughout Maryland.
In 2004, Notre Dame introduced its first Ph.D. program in education.
On September 9, 2011, the 116th anniversary of the first day of classes at the College, Notre Dame became Notre Dame of Maryland University.
