1891

1891 - Twin City Hospital opened in Winston-Salem, NC.

1903

Novant Health Presbyterian Medical Center opened in 1903 as a 20-bed hospital on North Church Street, located in now uptown Charlotte.

1912

In 1912, Winston voters approved bonds for a modern hospital to be constructed on East Fourth Street.

1918

In 1918, Elizabeth College merged with a school in Virginia and Presbyterian Medical Center used the money it had raised to buy the 20-acre college campus located just outside of the city limits at 200 Hawthorne Lane.

1930

Since 1930, Novant Health Thomasville Medical Center has met the medical needs of the community.

1934

In 1934, the Nurses' Home adjacent to the hospital was built.

1936

1936 - Rowan Memorial Hospital opened in Salisbury, NC.

1964

Forsyth Memorial Hospital, owned and managed by Forsyth County, opened in 1964.

1966

The hospital opened the first intensive care unit in the area in 1966 to give specialized care to coronary and critically-ill patients.

1967

In 1967, the Hospital Guild of Thomasville was formed.

1971

The facility was moved to a new location July 7,1971 after a $1.5 million community fund drive.

1971 - City Memorial Hospital of Thomasville renamed to Community General Hospital of Thomasville.

1971 - Medical Park Hospital opened in Winston-Salem.

1976

1976 - Orthopaedic Hospital of Charlotte is founded by a group of orthopedic surgeons.

1977

1977 - Brunswick Community Hospital opened in Supply, NC.

1980

In 1980, the Elizabeth College building was demolished and a new 119-bed patient tower opened, bringing the total number of beds to 554.

1984

In 1984, the hospital property was deeded from Forsyth County to Carolina Medicorp Inc. (CMI), a non-profit organization.

1986

In 1986, the Outpatient Cancer Treatment Center opened to bring cancer services close to home for patients and families.

1988

In 1988, the new intensive care, coronary care and pediatric units were opened.

1994

1994 - Presbyterian Hospital opened Presbyterian Hospital Matthews in Matthews, NC.

1995

1995 - Presbyterian Hospital opened Presbyterian Hemby Children's Hospital in Charlotte, NC.

1995 - Rowan Memorial Hospital renamed to Rowan Regional Medical Center.

1996

In 1996, Presbyterian Medical Center continued its tradition of being a regional and statewide leader in providing cancer services and hospice care by opening a new Cancer Center.

1998

1998 - Orthopaedic Hospital of Charlotte merged with Novant Health and is renamed to Presbyterian Orthopedic Hospital.

2001

In early 2001, Presbyterian Medical Center formed the Novant Health Heart & Vascular Institute, which combined the leading-edge cardiac services of the Belk Heart Center with the hospital's neurovascular services.

2003

In 2003, Presbyterian Medical Center celebrated its 100th anniversary of providing care to the residents of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region.

2004

In September 2004, the new Novant Health Women's Center welcomed its first patient.

2004 - Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville opened in Huntersville, NC.

2006

2006 - Brunswick Community Hospital merged with Novant Health and renamed to Brunswick Novant Medical Center.

2008

In 2008, Thomasville Medical Center opened a new $10 million emergency department and expanded the number of treatment rooms from 10 to 27.

2011

2011 - Kernersville Medical Center opened in Kernersville, NC.

2012

In January 2012, the new Women's Center opened featuring a new nursery, birthing suites and postpartum rooms to accommodate today's parents.

Our expansion in May 2012 added an additional 12 beds to our inpatient behavioral health unit, enabling us to serve up to 45 inpatients in this specialty unit designed to meet the unique medical needs of those age 55 and older.

Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center in Winston-Salem, North Carolina was previously designated as a Comprehensive Stroke Center in 2012, and has been re-certified three times.

2013

2013 - Clemmons Medical Center opened in Clemmons, NC.

2013 - All medical centers changed names to:

Novant Health announced a new brand in 2013 to bring a unifying business identity to its mix of more than 400 local brands.

2014

2014 - Haymarket Medical Center opened in Haymarket, VA.

2015

The hospital launched a fully integrated electronic medical record in March 2015 providing patients up-to-date and complete information at each point of care throughout the Novant Health system and enabling more coordinated, efficient care.

Novant Health announced a new affiliation with St Jude Children's Research Hospital on 21 April 2015.

In 2015, the health system provided more than $706 million in community benefit, including charity care and services.

2016

Novant Health UVA Health System was formed Jan 1, 2016, as a new regional partnership between Novant Health and the University of Virginia Health System.

2018

2018 - Novant Health Mint Hill Medical Center opens.

2019

Novant Health announced the launch of the Novant Health Institute of Innovation & Artificial Intelligence (AI) in June 2019.

2021

On July 1, 2021, Novant Health UVA Health System became part of UVA Health.

In late October 2021, a jury awarded a previous Novant white male executive $10 million for being fired due to his race and sex as a result of a goal of increasing diversity representation.
