Job Requirements

Job Summary (includes but is not limited to the following, other duties may be assigned)
This supervised position will allow for a college student who is seeking a career in the power industry to apply as well as enhance their knowledge with regard to all aspects power plant operation. This position will require the individual to work a normal day shift as well as rotating shift when required. Reports to Operations Manager.
Job Responsibilities
Assist in Maintaining shift operating logs and records when required.
Assist operations personnel in performing plant water chemistry tasks
Assist maintenance personnel in trouble shooting hydraulic systems
Assist operations personnel in plant equipment rounds
Assist operations personnel with safety permitting tasks
Assist while under direct supervision by a qualified Calpine Employee with mechanical, electrical, and operational tasks as needed.
Perform other duties as assigned while under the direct supervision of a Calpine employee.
Report to and take day-to-day instructions, both written and verbal, from a designated Calpine employee.
Job Requirements
Pursuing a degree in Process Technology or related field at an accredited college.
Completion of at least two semesters of coursework.
GPA of 3.0 or higher.
Legally eligible to work in the United States now and in the future.
Demonstrate strong mechanical aptitude.
Ability to work on elevated platforms up to 80 feet.
Ability to climb ladders.
Willingness to work outdoors, in field locations, in a "hands on" environment.
Willingness to adhere to plant safety standards, procedures, and practices.
Good comprehension of basic engineering practices.
Good problem solving and analytical ability.
Strong computer skills especially in the use of spreadsheet and word processing programs.
Strong verbal and written communication skills.
Good organization skills and attention to details are essential

**Essential Duties/Responsibilities:**
+ Operate, inspect, and monitor in a safe, efficient, reliable, and environmentally sound manner steam power plant equipment (i.e. Boiler / Furnace equipment, Turbine/Generator and its associated auxiliary equipment, Fuel Systems, Plant Auxiliary Systems includes valves, pumps, blowers, Environmental Control Process equipment, and Water Treatment Systems).
+ Recognize safety hazards and follow safety guidelines for personal protection, protection of fellow workers and the protection of the public.
+ Learn proper operating procedures.
+ Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret meter and gauge readings to troubleshoot plant equipment to resolve operational problems.
+ Monitor and record data available through the use of various instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by plant operational procedures.
+ Perform routine cleaning of work area.
+ Employee must arrange own transportation to work location and may be reassigned to another location at the Company's discretion.
**Working Conditions:**
+ Power Plant Environment-Work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures. Around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, and/or in confined places, on elevations in excess of 250 feet, or from platforms at heights of 5 feet or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices.
**Minimum Requirements:**
+ Possess or obtain within 60 days an Associate's Degree in Process Technology or related field OR
+ 2 years power plant operations or relevant military experience
**Additional Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:**
+ Ability to operate various switches and valves and knowledge of the effect each has on the total operation of the generating station.
+ Ability to work without supervision while carrying out duties.
+ Ability to handle multiple tasks or assignments at the same time.
+ Ability to communicate plant system and equipment conditions on to others.
+ Ability to discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel.

+ Ability to use addition, subtraction, multiplication and division to perform flow, pressure and meter calculation.
+ Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, procedures and technical manuals.
+ Ability to record and analyze readings of various electrical and mechanical meters.
+ Ability to generate work notifications for execution of equipment repair.
+ Ability to communicate information clearly, both orally and in writing.

+ Ability to perform routine laboratory tests and analysis on boiler water and make-up demineralizer samples.

**Physical Requirements:**
+ Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day.
+ Ability to work in mentally stressful environments: must be able to react to crises where immediate action is required to correct or curtail potentially damaging or hazardous situations.
+ Daily work expectation requires ability to perform tasks by walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing, and working with hand tools (up to 25 pounds) in position above and below head, and extended from body to complete repairs.
+ Lift, carry, position and usetools and/or equipment (weighing up to 50 lbs.) in awkward positions, swing various weights of sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull on chain-falls or come-a-longs.
+ Ability to twist the body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment.
+ Performance of duties may cause frequent jarring of the body.

Optimize plant preventative maintenance program to meet OEM recommendations, regulatory requirements, and corporate maintenance philosophy.
Assist in maintaining logs, manuals, records, blueprints and operating procedures in a neat and professional manner. Provide written reports on control system conditions when required. Incorporates safe behavior into all activities and consistently complies with all established safety and health policies and procedures, helps to identify and eliminate or actively manage risks in all work activities.

Provide maintenance support to troubleshoot, calibrate, and maintain all instrumentation associated with the boiler, turbine, generator, and all auxiliary equipment for the plant.

**Essential Duties/Responsibilities:**

+ Learn environmental rules and regulations, and effectively apply them to all work situations.
+ Install, calibrate, test, troubleshoot, and maintain protective relays, computers, metering, monitoring, and control systems on boilers, turbines, generators, and plant auxiliary equipment. In shop location includes performing benchwork and component troubleshooting.
+ Learn to reads, and interprets electric generating plants P&ID's and CWD's to locate, identify, troubleshoot, and repair plant systems, interlocks, etc.
+ Uses test equipment (oscilloscopes, multi-meters electronic bridges, loop calibrators) and hand tools (i.e. drills, screwdrivers) as necessary to troubleshoot and maintain devices and systems for the power plant.
+ Learn proper, safe use of tools and maintenance procedures.
+ Completes all written and electronic records ( i.e. work orders, calibration sheets, time cards, material requests) required to document the work in progress and as it is completed.
+ Learn power plant layout and system operations.
+ Continually updates knowledge of plant systems and instrumentation.
+ Makes decisions about how best to repair equipment and what resources (tools, time equipment) will be needed.
+ Employee must arrange own transportation to work location and may be reassigned to another location at the Company's discretion.
**Minimum Requirements:**
+ Associates' Degree or equivalent education in instrumentation, pneumatics, engineering, or a related technical discipline
+ OR
+ Two (2) years military experience in electronics repair and calibration may be substituted for formal training.
+ Must live within reasonable commuting distance of the plant in Thompsons, Texas.
+ Valid driver's license
+ Must receive a rating of Recommended on the NRG Pre-employment Assessment test.
