Nueces County company history timeline

1837

Established in 1837, the General Land Office consists of land grant records and maps dating to the 18th century relating to the passage of Texas public lands to private ownership.

1846

Founded in 1846 from portions of San Patricio County.

Corpus Christi, which was incorporated in 1846, became the county seat.

1849

Although large numbers of fortune-seekers passed through Corpus Christi to join wagon trains heading west during the California gold rush of 1849, few settlers put down roots.

1859

In 1859 no fewer than forty-five small vessels carried trade between Corpus Christi and Indianola.

NUECESTOWN, KNOWN LOCALLY AS "THE MO-ITS" BECAUSE OF SEVERAL CLUSTERS OF TREES, GREW TO HAVE, IN ADDITION TO THE FERRY, A HOTEL, PACKERY, AND ONE OF THE COUNTY'S FIRST COTTON GINS. A POST OFFICE OPENED IN 1859.
