Arranging and loading sheet metal onto rolling rack
Pull sheet metal material when needed using a forklift
Call up appropriate program, set-up and operate CNC turret punch
Read and interpret bills of materials (BOM) and blueprints
Select proper die clearances based on material requirements
Change tooling as required and perform scheduled maintenance tasks (i.e. tool sharpening)
Deburr parts
Check dimensions such as gauge, height and width, holes and cut-outs against print
Follow production schedule as assigned

This role plays a key part in creating a safe, well-functioning shop environment that supports student learning, experimentation, and design. The Machinist works closely with students, faculty, and the Fabrication Manager to support coursework, projects, and hands-on instruction using both CNC and manual machining equipment.
Core Responsibilities
Shop Operations & Equipment Support | 45%
* Operate, maintain, and troubleshoot CNC and manual (hand-crank) machining equipment.
* Assist with machine setup, tooling, and basic maintenance to ensure safe and reliable operation.
* Support the procurement and organization of shop supplies, tools, and equipment in coordination with the Fabrication Manager.
Student Training & Instructional Support | 45%
* Train and guide students in safe metal shop practices, proper equipment use, and foundational machining techniques.
* Provide hands-on assistance to students as they fabricate components for academic projects and coursework.
* Reinforce a culture of safety, accountability, and learning within the shop environment.
Collaboration & Learning Environment | 10%
* Collaborate with faculty and staff to support instructional goals and lab-based learning activities.
* Help maintain a clean, organized, and safety-compliant shop that supports effective teaching and learning.
Qualifications and Core Competencies
* Demonstrated experience with CNC milling and manual machining equipment.
* Ability to explain technical concepts clearly and support learners with varying levels of experience.
* Strong commitment to safety practices in a shop or fabrication environment.
* Ability to work independently while also collaborating effectively with faculty, staff, and students.
* Clear communication skills and attention to detail.
Preferred Qualifications
* Experience working in an academic, instructional, or training-focused setting.
* Familiarity with CAD/CAM software and its application to machining workflows.
* Prior experience supporting student projects or hands-on learning environments.
Other Details
This is a part-time, temporary position intended to support instructional and fabrication needs within the Engineering & Physics Department. Work hours will not exceed 20 hours per week and may vary based on academic schedules, lab activity, and student project timelines, with the majority of work occurring during the academic year. The appointment is expected to conclude on May 22, 2026.
This appointment is temporary and is not eligible for university benefits, including health insurance or paid vacation and holiday time off. In accordance with Washington State law, employees in this role will accrue sick leave at a rate of one (1) hour for every forty (40) hours worked. Accrued sick leave may be used during the appointment but is not paid out upon separation from employment.
The position works primarily in a shop and fabrication environment and requires adherence to all university safety policies and procedures. Successful completion of a background check and sexual misconduct disclosure is required prior to employment.
