Numerical control programmer job description

Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, locations of surfaces and machining parameters. Responsible for programming lathes and mills, the set-up of mills and lathes, and maintaining equipment and completion of PM's.

Position is first shift - Currently 6:00 am to 4:30 pm - Monday through Thursday with occasional mandatory Fridays.

Responsibilities
Plans machining by studying work orders, blueprints, engineering plans, materials, specifications, locations of surfaces and machining parameters.
Program lathes and mills by entering instructions including zero and reference points; setting tool registers, offsets, compensation, and conditional switches; calculating requirements, including basic math, geometry and trigonometry; proving parts programs.
Set-up mills and lathes by installing and adjusting chucks, tools attachments, collates, bushings, cams, gears, stops, and stock pushers; indicating vices; trimming heads.
Verifies settings by measuring positions, first-run parts, and sample workpieces adhering to standards.
Maintains safe operation of machines
Maintains equipment by completion of P.M.s.
Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions, irregularities and continuing needs.
Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
Perform other duties as assigned.
SUMMARY OF WORKING CONDITIONS
This position may involve potential exposure to hazardous materials, and environmental changes (heat/cold), and the employee must be able to work under stress occasioned by production requirements, personnel, and the needs of other departments, utilizing proper body mechanics.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
The physical requirements described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical activities required of this job include but are not limited to considerable use of arms and legs and moving the whole body include climbing, lifting, balancing, walking, standing, stooping, and handling tools and materials.
The employee must regularly lift and move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift and move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
Exerting up to 10 lbs. of force occasionally, and/or a negligible amount of force to frequently lift, push, pull or otherwise move objects. Sedentary work involves sitting most of the time; however, it may involve walking and standing for brief periods of time. Jobs are sedentary if walking and standing are required only occasionally and all other sedentary criteria are met.
Qualifications
• 2 year technical degree or 5 years set up and programming experience
• Hands on experience with conventional machinery and computerized numerical control machinery.
• Experience with Fanuc Controls
• Ability to read blueprint/drawing, write and edit CNC programs and trouble shoot CNC problems
• Ability to effectively interpret and translate instructions to other employees in a professional and respectful manner.
• Knowledge of trigonometry and advanced algebra. Ability to perform basic mathematical computations. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations.
• Ability to define problem, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions. Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form and deal with several abstract and concrete variables
• Ability to lift 50 lbs. when required.
• Regularly required to stand, walk and reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
• The work environment noise level is usually moderate to high. Hearing protection is required.
• Willing to work overtime as needed

Essential Functions
- The Applications Engineer-CNC Programmer will work with the Process, Repair Development and Production Engineering teams to develop and implement consistent CNC programs to cater to current and future production requirements.
- Provide CNC related support to the engineers and provide operator training for new programs
- Provide daily operations support in the form of CNC programming and trouble shooting
- Review Part specific repair instructions to develop multi-axis CNC programs
- Monitors all work in progress to ensure that quality and engineering standards are met and that programs are effective through the entire process. Edits and approves changes to programs or schedules as necessary. Produces periodic project status reports comparing actual to forecasted timeline.
- Acts as a liaison with internal and external customers, assuring satisfaction with progress and quality.
- Participates in projects as a team member and/or team project leader.
- Responsible for observing all applicable safety requirements and immediately reporting any unsafe practices/conditions.
- Carries out special duties as assigned.

Competencies/Education
- 2 year Associates of Science degree in aerospace, mechanical, manufacturing, materials, or industrial engineering or equivalent work experience.
- Minimum of 3 years experience with CNC programming
- Experience with gas turbine engine component repair preferred but not required.
- Experience with developing and using macros and probing routines to simplify programs and minimize operator error
- Strong background and knowledge of machining including turning, milling, drilling, and grinding
- Knowledge of gas turbine engine maintenance, theory, and performance preferred but not required.
- Knowledge of machining of high temperature aviation grade materials including Inco 718, Titanium, and various other superalloys preferred but not required
- Knowledge of machine applications including Mills, Lathes, and EDMs
- Ability to read and interpret engine manual repair instructions, inspection criteria, and part blue prints.
- Strong technical writing skills, interpersonal communication skills, and proficient computer skills.
- Ability to make quick decisions in a fast paced and high part volume environment.
- Working knowledge of precision measurement instruments and gauges.
- Must be a US Citizen or a US Permanent Resident per ITAR regulations.

System One is seeking a CNC Programmer & Machine Specialist for a leading manufacturing company in Huntsville, AL.
RESPONSIBILITIES

+ Setup, program and operate CNC machine centers and lathes as production needs dictate.

+ Write new programs for all CNC machines with the best and most efficient sequence for machining parts.

+ Review and modify existing programs for all CNC machines with the best and most efficient sequence for machining parts.

+ Provide CNC setup instructions for each program/ part.

+ Maintain program revisions and support documentation for internal and customer specified changes.

+ Analyze and select speeds, feeds, and cutting tools for programs.

+ Check completed programs by running simulations or tests.

+ Determine, purchase, and inventory the proper type and adequate quantity of cutting tools and tool holding equipment.

REQUIREMENTS:

+ High school diploma or general education degree (GED); plus Trade/Technical school certificate and 5-7 years of CNC programming and machine operation experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

+ Ability to program equipment using G/M Code to manufacture per product specifications - including Mazak, FANUC, Okuma, and Hyundai

+ Ability to read blueprint or job order for product specifications such as dimensions and tolerances, and tooling instructions such as fixtures, feed rates, cutting speeds, depth of cut, and determine sequence of operations.

+ Basic computer skills with an emphasis on Microsoft Word and Excel.

+ Strong math and problem-solving skills.

+ Willingness to work overtime when needed.
