Substitutes wishing to work long-term assignments (lasting longer than 19 consecutive days) must, in addition to the above, have: A valid Alaska type C certificate with an endorsement in nursing. The following are preferred: A valid Alaska type C certificate with an endorsement in nursing. Experience working with children. Experience working as a nurse in a public education system. The position requires proficiency in the care of critically ill and injured patients across the age spectrum from newborn to the geriatric population and knowledge of the adaptations necessary for patient management in the aircraft and during flight. The Flight Nurse must also be familiar with aircraft operating procedures and safety practices. The ability to establish positive interpersonal and professional relationships is essential. **DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES** : Safety is the flight nurse's first priority. As such, you must comply with all published safety policies and procedures. If you observe an unsafe practice or condition in any aspect of organization, you must initiate reporting and resolution of the issue. This may include submission of safety concern forms to ALNW safety committee. Will actively and positively participate in shift briefings, cabin checklists, debriefings and other procedures. Acquires extensive working knowledge of policies, procedures and protocols related to the Airlift Northwest program. Acquire and maintain a strong knowledge base in critical care practice. The Flight Nurse is accountable to the Chief Flight Nurse for adherence to written standards care and ALNW policies and procedures. Prepares aircraft environment for anticipated patient needs on the outbound trip: 1) Oxygen therapy, 2) equipment for airway management, 3) IV fluids, 4) specific medications and 5) other required treatments. On arrival at referring site, introduces transport personnel, assists with and directs stabilization procedures and preparation of the patient for flight. Consults with appropriate medical control. Compiles necessary documents and data to be transported with patient. In-flight, is responsible for delivery of total patient care. The Flight Nurse continually monitors patient status in coordination with another flight nurse and intervenes as necessary. The Flight Nurse maintains electronic and written records of patient condition and care provided according to established standards and guidelines. The Flight Nurse assists in additional patient care as required on arrival to the receiving hospital. All records and reports are transferred to receiving personnel. After transfer of the patient is complete, the Flight Nurse is responsible for restocking flight bags and aircraft. Equipment must be cleaned and maintained so that it is ready for the next flights. Any problems with equipment, patient management or other agency personnel will be immediately reported to the Airlift Administrator on Call and/ or the Medical Director as appropriate. Participates in post flight debrief with crew and communication center. Completes flight records, computer charting, and airway documentation tracking and other quality improvement projects and data collection as required. Participates in any debriefing meeting with Medical Director, Chief Flight Nurse, Nurse Managers and other staff as appropriate when requested. The RN collaborates with an interdisciplinary team to support the complex physical, emotional, and behavioral health needs of clients primarily at ARCH which is 24/7 structured residential environment located in Eagle River. The RN will occasionally assist at other VOA Alaska locations in the Anchorage area. The RN provides nursing care and monitoring, crisis intervention, health education and care coordination in a dynamic and fast-paced environment. VOA Alaska is a youth-serving organization providing prevention, early intervention, treatment, and recovery supports to youth and families struggling with mental illness and addiction. Key Responsibilities: Conduct age-appropriate nursing assessments upon admission and throughout treatment, as directed by the Health and Wellness Director. Collaborate with medical, clinical, and administrative staff to develop and update individualized care plans. Collaborate with Behavioral Health Associates (BHAs) and the Residential Staffing Manager (RSM) to support daily program needs, client monitoring and safety, including basic illness and injury management. Administer and document scheduled and PRN medications, including psychotropic medications and medications for addiction treatment (MAT) including extended-release buprenorphine injections. Educate clients and caregivers/BHAs on medications, health, and wellness topics under the direction of the Health and Wellness Director and psychiatrists. Monitor and manage withdrawal symptoms using appropriate protocols (i.e. CIWA, COWS) and standing orders developed and overseen by facility psychiatrists and practitioners. Monitor vital signs, manage chronic conditions, assess physical development, and provide basic illness and injury care within the RN scope of practice; consults with the facility practitioner for situations requiring primary care services. Respond promptly to medical and psychiatric emergencies, ensuring client safety and supporting suicide prevention and self-harm risk protocols, collaborating with medical, clinical and other team members. Maintain accurate and timely documentation in accordance with program policy, state and federal regulations. Support discharge planning in collaboration with the case manager, medical and clinical teams. Model and support trauma-informed and culturally sensitive care. Develop therapeutic relationships with clients based on trust and consistency. Provide daily support to the youth and model healthy emotional regulation. Offer a consistent adult presence for adolescents with complex trauma or mental health needs. Help coordinate outside medical appointments including specialty referrals. Collaborate with the Health and Wellness Director on medication administration processes and scheduling for daily med pass windows. Qualifications: Active, unrestricted Alaska Registered Nurse license Eligible to bill for services through Alaska Medicaid Minimum one year experience as an RN working in a behavioral health or SUD setting, ideally working with adolescents. Current CPR/BLS certification or ability to obtain. Strong written and verbal communication, critical thinking, and de-escalation skills Ability to work with adolescents, their families, and staff in an empathetic, friendly, and respectful manner.
