You will determine donor eligibility to donate plasma, management of donor adverse events, review of laboratory test results, and donor notification of unsuitable test results. The Medical Support Specialist (Plasma Center Nurse) works under the guidance of the Center Manager (or Assistant Manager as applicable) for operational guidance and under the management of the Center Physician for medical issues. The Medical Support Specialist will be familiar with regulations of the plasma collection industry or a manufacturing environment. The Medical Support Specialist follows guidance provided by BioLife Medical Affairs and provides center level support of environmental, health and safety (EHS). How you will contribute You will determine donor eligibility; to include, proper management of informed consent, AIDS education and confidential self-exclusion, medical history interview and acceptance requirements, physical examination, blood testing, and reviewing Serological Protein Electrophoresis (SPE). You will evaluate donor reaction(s), which occurs at the facility as outlined in the SOPs. Follow applicable SOPs for medical emergencies including the development of Center Physician's standing orders and donor transport to emergency care facilities. You will refer to the Center Physician or Medical Affairs (as applicable) when in need of providing unacceptable findings to donors, or guidance concerning medical or technical issues, including donor safety and eligibility. You will support the Hepatitis B and Seasonal Flu vaccination programs for employees as applicable. You will manage employee incidents and determine whether further evaluation is required by occupational health/ER. Refer to EHS guidance regarding employee incidents. You can be a Pandemic Coordinator when authorized by EHS and support investigations associated with pandemic threats within the local community as indicated by EHS or Medical Affairs. Additionally, this role will manage and supervise staff that include contract classified staff, and will provide oversight for regulatory requirements, quality assurance standards, preventative maintenance, safety protocols, IT system functionality, and support to academic programs and training, among other duties listed below. The HSM will work closely with all levels of leadership within DLMP and across UW Medicine, including, but not limited to, Harborview Medical Center, UWMC-Montlake, and UWMC-Northwest to ensure clinical excellence, optimize staff productivity, and uphold laboratory compliance standards. Work schedule: * 100% FTE * Day shift * Work schedule to be discussed with the hiring manager * 100% onsite What you'll contribute: Laboratory Operations * Set goals for the laboratory utilizing Objectives and Key Results (OKR's) process. This includes, but is not limited to, formulation of division goals and policies and planning strategies to ensure the division is able to meet future demands. * Manage change and foster innovations and improvements in laboratory function using technological advances with direct application for laboratory-based diagnoses. * Consult and provide Administrative and Medical Directors of Laboratory Operations activities, needs, and problems with resolution. * Responsible and accountable for proper and efficient operations. * Design, develop and direct implementation of strategic initiatives defined in the above process. * Oversee and consult in the development of novel educational tools/programs for training, maintaining technical competency, and QA/QI. * Oversee and consult in development of optimized laboratory utilization algorithms. * Consult and collaborate with existing clinical research units to support ongoing laboratory projects. * Develop and implement department and division lab policies and changes in procedure; consult regularly with the laboratory directors. Ensure all policies and procedures are clear and understood by faculty and staff. * Evaluate and recommend equipment needs; manage the selection of equipment and supplies. Supports negotiations of contracts and pricing for equipment, standing orders, and service contracts. * Responsible and accountable for compliance with all federal and state regulations as well as accrediting requirements that impact laboratory operations. * Oversee or delegate management of location of safety information, disaster drill procedures, and MSDS manuals, and assess information in response to queries or emergency situations, which includes keeping MSDS information current and available for staff and other required internal and external stakeholders. * Serve as a representative and liaison for the laboratory with other healthcare personnel when required. * Resolve service-related problems with other departments. * Direct and resolve or delegate resolution of quality control standards and programs; monitor proficiency testing, alternative assessment testing, and preventive maintenance program. * Manage or delegate clinical laboratory rotations for all levels of students and trainees; may prepare and present lecture material to residents, medical laboratory science students, and other medical personnel. * Collaborate with other Laboratory Supervisors/Managers on joint concerns. * Prepare presentations for staff, students, and professional meetings. * Assume additional duties and responsibilities as assigned by the Faculty, Department Administrators, or Department Chairperson. Supervisory * Maintain a competent technical staff and high-quality laboratory testing and training. Coordinate continuing education and in-service education for staff. * Oversee the development of training procedures and checklists to ensure competent technical staff. * Interview, hire, orient, and train new employees to maintain a qualified technical staff; maintain documentation of training and required competencies. * Delegate responsibilities, duties, and tasks to optimize the use of staff time, skill, and expertise without compromising quality of testing. * Assess and adjust laboratory staff, considering workload, staff turnover, and budget; plan staff schedules and rotations; assign staff to work sections; review time records to ensure appropriateness of time used; act upon vacation and leave requests. * Review and evaluate employee performance; provide fair and immediate feedback on job performance for staff; counsel staff to improve performance as required; recommend disciplinary or remedial action as needed. * Manage and keep staff abreast of compliance and billing issues and follow acceptable laboratory policies. IT Management * Consult, design, and provide recommendation and up to date requirements to Analytics and Laboratory Information System (LIS) team to implement changes and improvements. * Responsible and accountable for oversight and management of automation to performance at the quality, regulatory, and margin of error level. Keep vendor accountable and support resolution to keep programs up-to-date and downstream programs to display data accurately. * Maintain working knowledge of the Laboratory Information System (LIS), bioinformatic pipelines, and laboratory workflow software systems including, * Manage downstream computer systems display the report in a user-friendly and required regulatory format. * Use the LIS, other information systems, and reporting systems to ensure consistency in performance across the team and that they are meeting the laboratory's goals, act on resolution if needed. What you'll need: * Bachelor's degree in Medical Laboratory Science, science, or other relevant fields. * Medical Laboratory Science certification with the American Society for Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or equivalent certifying organization; or certification with specialty organization appropriate to the laboratory divisions. * Six (6) years of progressively responsible clinical technologist experience to include three (3) years in a leadership or supervisory capacity (or equivalent). * Experience with wet bench procedures, instrumentation, quality management/assurance, and CAP proficiency and accreditation guidelines. * Track record of effective management of teams and staff to meet group goals, meet deadlines, and set priorities. * Track record of effective Change Management. * Extensive knowledge and expertise in clinical laboratory test/system validations and data management. * Demonstrated experience with laboratory process improvements. Desired qualifications: * Master's degree in Medical Laboratory Science or equivalent field. * Lead/Supervisor/Manager experience in all core lab areas specifically in Clinical Chemistry, Hematology, Coagulation, and Urinalysis. * Substantial and comprehensive knowledge and experience in chemistry, hematology, coagulation, urinalysis instrumentation, and microcopy. * Lab Manager experience of 5 or more years. Experience in core lab or reference laboratory setting. * Experience with Lean Management or Six Sigma certification/training. * Experience handling Total Lab Automation lines in a reference lab setting or centralized core laboratories.
