Prototypes, a program of HealthRIGHT 360's residential substance use disorder (SUD) program is a new program contracted with Department of Public Health's (DPH) Substance Abuse Prevention and Control (SAPC) program for residential drug Medi-Cal (DMC) services for up to 99 adult men and women: 33 that are for men who are judicially involved, 33 for men, and 33 for women. The residential DMC program will employ 100 people and works closely with the other BHC programs to provide a continuum of services for low income/Medi-Cal population. The program is located on the campus of Martin Luther King Jr. Hospital in the Willowbrook area of South Los Angeles and will serve all LA County residents. Under the direct supervision of the Associate Medical Director/Medical Director, the Primary Care Nurse Practitioner (PCNP) is responsible for conducting initial medical evaluations of new clients in residential, withdrawal management as well as outpatient branches within MLK Behavioral Health Center (BHC) to ensure clients are medically stable to participate fully in BHC's recovery plan. Furthermore, PCNP is also expected to identify clients that will benefit from Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) for substance use disorders such as buprenorphine or naltrexone and prescribe and follow up with clients for ongoing MAT services. The PCNP is responsible for completing a medical history, performing a physical examination, ordering and interpreting laboratory tests, and diagnosing and treating acute common illnesses and injuries within the scope of Incidental Medical Services (IMS). If client requires further ongoing chronic medical management, PCNP is expected to work with residential staff so that clients can be referred to a primary care provider in the community. In the future, this care may be integrated within the BHC program in which case the PCNP would follow up with these patients and provide primary care. PCNP is also expected to help prescribe bridging medications as needed for clients until they can be connected to a specific primary care provider (30 days). PCNP should also feel comfortable providing first line management for patients with uncomplicated stable mental health diagnosis such as depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. Appropriate supervision will be available for consultation for management of more complex mental or physical health issues. Key Responsibilities Skills & Medicine Responsibilities: Educate, support and care for participants receiving medication assisted treatment and/or withdrawal management. Analyze and interpret participant history, symptoms, physical findings, and/or diagnostic information to develop appropriate diagnoses. Under the general supervision of a Physician and direction of the Executive Director, the Nurse Practitioner provides a wide range of primary health care services within the Student Health Center (SHC) including assessment, diagnostic, and preventive and health maintenance services at the Palm Desert Campus. The incumbent works under the supervision of a physician using established standardized procedures and/or process protocols. The Nurse Practitioner collaborates with the SHC Executive Director and their supervising Physician(s) to develop standardized procedures and/or process protocols and scope of practice for their position. The incumbent provides a wide range of primary health care services, such as conducting physical examinations; diagnosing, treating, and managing illnesses and injuries; ordering tests and interpreting the results; and counseling patients on preventive care. This position is primarily located at the Palm Desert campus and may work occasionally on the San Bernardino campus. Duties and Responsibilities: Conducts comprehensive physical exams and obtains detailed medical histories Diagnoses and treats common acute and chronic conditions, including reproductive health issues Provides medication abortion services and counseling on STIs, contraception, and pregnancy Orders, interprets, and evaluates diagnostic tests and lab work Offers psychosocial assessments and referrals as needed Administers first aid, urgent care, and emergency support Prescribes medications and educates patients on treatment plans and preventive care Performs minor procedures (e.g., suturing, biopsies, wound care, immunizations) Maintains accurate medical records and ensures continuity of care Collaborates with physicians and healthcare professionals on complex cases Adheres to university protocols for quality assurance and infection control Stays current on best practices relevant to student health care May be assigned to provide lead work direction to specified SHC support staff which involves organizing and planning work, training and orienting employees, scheduling support staff, assigning and reviewing work, and providing input to employee selection and performance evaluations. Participates in departmental meetings; engages in professional development activities, completes all department and university required trainings as assigned; performs other related duties as assigned and supporting the SHC operations Must be willing to support San Bernardino and Palm Desert Campus. Minimum Qualifications: Required Education and Experience Education and Experience: Academic degree or certificate from an approved college or university-based Nurse Practitioner program or equivalent training and experience as outlined by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN). Incumbents must be clinically competent in a medical specialty applicable to their position and possess sufficient experience to independently perform the duties of a Nurse Practitioner within that specialty. License and Certifications: Possess and maintain a valid California license as a Registered Nurse and a BRN certificate evidencing that the individual is qualified to use the title of Nurse Practitioner, as required by the California Board of Registered Nursing. In addition, if the incumbent is delegated the authority to furnish medications, the incumbent must possess and maintain a valid BRN Furnishing Certificate. If the furnishing procedures include the delegated authority to furnish specific controlled substances, incumbents must also possess and maintain a valid DEA number and certificate. Required Qualifications Comprehensive knowledge of advanced nursing and primary care principles, methods and procedures; thorough knowledge of medical theories, practices and protocols relative to the scope of practice, subject areas such as growth and development, pathophysiology, psychosocial assessment, pharmacology, nutrition, disease management, and the principles of health maintenance, applicable state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to practice as a Nurse Practitioner; and general knowledge of effective supervisory principles and practices, if assigned lead work direction. Possess the abilities and clinical competence required to work as a Nurse Practitioner including, but not limited to, the ability to work independently in assigned areas of practice established by the supervising physician; demonstrate clinical competence in eliciting patient histories, conducting examinations, diagnosing and treating acute and chronic illnesses and injuries, assessing patient needs and making appropriate referrals; use clinical techniques and diagnostic tools; interpret laboratory and other test results; keep current with developments in the medical field pertinent to the incumbent's scope of practice; establish and maintain effective working relationships with other health center staff; be sensitive to and communicate effectively with diverse patients; and, if assigned, provide lead work direction to specified health center support staff. Current/Valid Nurse Practitioner Furnishing License Current/Valid DEA License Current Basic Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) certification. Valid CA driver's license Preferred Qualifications Master's degree or Advanced degree. Two or more years' experience in primary care. Experience with women's health, including knowledge about family planning methods. Experience in college health or experience working with college-age patients. Intrauterine Device (IUD) insertion experience. Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) certification. Compensation and Benefits: Anticipated Hiring Range: $58.00 - $65.00 per hour Classification Salary Range: $27.39 - $100.10 per hour The salary offered will take into account internal equity and experience among other factors.
