Nurse Practitioner (Neurology) - Additional Duties: Evaluate and treat patients with headaches, including new evaluations and follow-ups, in accordance with detailed practice guidelines and standard operating procedures. Neurologists will always be present and available; oversight provided as needed. Collaborate with patients and families to achieve therapeutic goals. Evaluate and treat beneficiaries presenting to the Neurology Clinic and sub-clinics for acute, routine, wellness, and follow-up visits; refer to staff internist as appropriate. Obtain patient health and developmental history. Perform and record health appraisals, including physical assessments and evaluations. Differentiate between normal findings and those requiring consultation or referral. Diagnose common acute conditions, illnesses, or minor trauma in accordance with legally accepted protocols, Nurse Practice Acts, or BUMEDINST 6550.10B CH-1 (or subsequent instructions). Formulate health care plans that emphasize self-care responsibility and involve the patient, family, physician, and other health care professionals. Identify resources and coordinate referrals for patients and families requiring further evaluation and services, in collaboration with the medical preceptor and clinic manager. Assist in staff education. Provide nursing intervention and health care services through counseling and education. Promote best business practices using evidence-based medicine. Collect and record all examination data in the appropriate format for physician review, approval, and/or recommendation. Help maintain positive interdepartmental relations through effective communication and work coordination. Assist in systematically monitoring the effectiveness of practice through client databases and outcomes evaluation. Perform and attend required training according to departmental policy, including semiannual skills fair meetings. Qualifications Education: Nurse Practitioners must be graduates of an academic program in their nursing specialty that is accredited by either the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). A Master's degree in Nursing is required. The Contractor may not request an equivalency determination as a substitute for this education requirement. Experience: Nurse Practitioners must possess a minimum of two years of experience within the last three years working as an Adult, Family, or Medical/Surgical Nurse Practitioner in an outpatient setting. Licensure: Nurse Practitioners must maintain current, full, active, and unrestricted licensure as a Registered Nurse. In addition, they must hold and maintain certification as a Family or Medical/Surgical Nurse Practitioner through either ANCC or AANP. Certifications: In addition to Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required by the base contract, Nurse Practitioners must hold and maintain board certification as a Family or Medical/Surgical Nurse Practitioner. Acceptable certifying bodies include the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP), or another nationally recognized nursing certification organization appropriate to the specialty area, such as the National Certification Board of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners and Nurses, the American Nurses Association, or the National Certification Corporation for the Obstetric, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Specialties. Additional Requirements: Candidates are required to provide two letters of recommendation written within the last two years. At least one letter must be from a physician or supervisor who has personally observed and evaluated the practitioner's clinical skills. Responsible for providing prenatal, postnatal, general medical care and treatment of patients within the Maternal Fetal Medicine division which is a division of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at Eastern Virginia Medical School. Nurse Practitioners are expected to function as an independent provider primarily coordinating pre-pregnancy, prenatal and post-partum care in women with high-risk pregnancies. This position will provide a combination of inpatient and outpatient care duties. Maternal Fetal Medicine nurse practitioners' function in an expanded nursing role and perform selected tasks and services within the province of medicine as well as tasks that fall within the province of nursing. Nursing and medicine must maintain ongoing collaboration in education and practice so that the nurse practitioner is maximally effective in meeting the primary health-care needs of women. When performing nursing aspects of this role, the practitioner must have the opportunity to engage in independent as well as co-operative decision-making. When performing expanded aspects of the role that overlap with medicine, the practitioner must function in collaboration with qualified physicians within the framework of jointly approved guidelines. The HCW shall provide services within the scope of the clinical privileges granted by the MTF Director, the applicable duties provided in the basic contract, and the following: Provide comprehensive medical assessment, examination, consultation, diagnosis, and treatment plan for neonates, under the direction of a staff Pediatrician. Provide medical management of critically ill neonates in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and other areas to include neonatal resuscitation, conventional ventilation, stabilize and maintain Level III care prior to transport, prescription of medications (including controlled substances), to treat neonatal medical disorders, under direction of a staff neonatologist. Request and interpret laboratory tests, electrocardiograms, and radiographic procedures, and other tests as needed under the direction of staff Pediatricians. Perform procedures including sedation, endotracheal intubation, routine phlebotomy, arterial phlebotomy, percutaneous central venous line placement, umbilical line placement, lumbar puncture, suprapubic bladder taps, bladder catheterization, needle thoracentesis, chest tube placement, circumcision as deemed appropriate under the Government supervision of the staff Pediatrician. Attend routine and high-risk deliveries as a member of the Resuscitation Team and perform Neonatal Resuscitation. Provide medical care to neonates awaiting transport to other facilities and from other higher level of care neonatal intensive care units (NICUs), under direction of a staff Pediatrician. Provide outpatient care for routine well baby appointments and NICU follow-up appointments. Qualifications Degree: Master's degree in nursing Education: Graduate from an academic program, within the nursing specialty field of study that is accredited by a regional or national nursing accrediting agency recognized by the Accreditation Commission for Education in Nursing (ACEN) or the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (CCNE). Have successfully completed at least twelve (12) contact hours of continuing NNP education within the preceding twenty-four (24) months which maintains skills and knowledge as an NNP.
