Join our team:

As the successful Nursery Greenhouse Manager you will be working closely with the West Coast Division Manager (10+ years in the industry) as well as the CEO (13 years with Speedling). This role will analyze, evaluate and effectively plan day to day operations to maximize value of the facility. This includes to organize and direct all daily activities to produce horticultural transplants with consistent quality meeting the customer expectations while maximizing the margin and profit.

The job details:

  • Manage nursery to maintain the highest level of customer satisfaction.
  • Analyze and evaluate financials to ensure financial goals are met.
  • Manage Grow team and to deliver large volumes of high quality crops.
  • Hire, mentor, train and develop direct reports and their direct reports to build a stronger team.
  • Work closely with all Supervisors, Crew Leaders, and Office Staff to ensure that all aspects of each facility are running efficiently.
  • Oversee Grow team's spray programs and submit monthly use reports to county.
  • Manage resources including greenhouse and outdoor growing areas to maximize production, minimize impact from environmental conditions and mitigate company exposure and liability.
  • Select, purchase, or approve purchase of raw materials such as seed, plant nutrients, and disease control chemicals.
  • Make sure all tools for all jobs are available so the jobs can be done. Plastic, soil media, labels etc.
  • Manage expenses including Capital Expenditure plan and oversee all renovations or additions. Oversee and advise on all repairs and maintenance projects.
  • Coordinate clerical, record keeping, inventory, requisition, and marketing activities with functional leaders throughout the company.
  • Ensure Injury Illness Prevention Program is up to date with Company-wide policies and procedures and adhered to by the employees.
  • Maintain Safety programs and other aspects of regulatory compliance.

SUMMARY DESCRIPTION:

Responsible for preparation, planting, pollinating, data collecting, harvesting, shelling, and inventory recording of the summer and counter-season corn nurseries. Also responsible for training and supervision of temporary part-time staff that assist with nursery activities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Responsible for the organization of the inbreds and developmental material in storage and the inventory records that coincide with the physical inventory.
* Selection of materials and lines in the nursery based on the criterion specified. This includes conventional, transgenic and specialty material.
* Coordinate and prepare materials for breeding projects in Kearney, NE and other counter season nurseries.
* Work in Mexico during the pollination period of the winter nursery as requested by the RM lead.
* Maintains detailed records on each step of the nursery operation.
* Assists the Corn Breeding team and other stakeholders with the analysis of data, preparation of data reports and preparation of lists for testing and or subsequent generations of development.
* Conceives and implements new technologies allowing breeding tasks to be done more efficiently.
* Coordinates with the other nursery managers and corn breeders and stakeholders on the sharing of materials and joint projects.
* Effective training and utilization of seasonal workers is essential. All workers involved in the nursery operations must perform the work to the designated quality standards.
* Ensure safety rules are followed at all times.
* Promote a positive image of the company and the research department.
* Other duties as required by supervisor.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS:

* Bachelor's Degree in agricultural field required, Master's a plus. University courses should include breeding, crop science, genetics, or statistics.
* Minimum of three (3) to five (5) years experience required
* Experience in managing a large corn nursery breeding operation is a plus
* Experience operating a tractor and other equipment required

KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS/ABILITIES:

* Good communication skills, both verbal and written
* Ability to work as part of a team
* Excellent planning and organization skills
* Ability to plan and manage multiple projects, prioritize tasks, and meet deadlines
* Strong attention to detail and problem-solving skills
* Ability to maintain confidential information
* Ability to learn multiple computer software programs for data collection and retrieval
* Ability to obtain a forklift operator license
* Ability to obtain a pesticide/herbicide applicator license.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and Powerpoint preferred) and common PC based software

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

* Ability to lift 50 lbs.
* Ability to work extended hours outdoors during the entire growing season.
* Ability to travel up to 10%, some overnight travel required
* Must have valid driver's license and meet MVR guidelines
