In 1970 a major expansion program started with the purchase of 230 acres in Albers, IL. The water supply was plentiful and the land was well suited for growing plant material.

1972

The AAN's retail division is the 600-member Garden Centers of America, founded in 1972.

1975

1975 Vietnam War ends; Diane Ott Whealy and Kent Whealy found the Seed Savers Exchange.

1978

1980

1980 First United States patent issued for a genetically engineered organism.

1981

The Jungle Nursery first opened its doors in 1981 as a foliage nursery.

1984

As the wholesale business steadily grew all but one retail store would close by 1984.

1988

1991

However, nurseries and growers in 40 states soon began reporting problems in the spring of 1991, complaining that their plant stock was rapidly dying or failing to reach maturity.

1998

An unwavering passion for agriculture and ornamental horticulture drove Founder Sandy Stein and his wife, Robin, to reopen the nursery in 1998 with an even more expansive line of plants, including cold-tolerant palms and outdoor ornamentals.

1999

Calloway's, in turn, acquired Houston-based Cornelius Nurseries, the other large Texas-based retail garden center in September 1999.

2000

In 2000, The Lerio® Corporation, a well-established, Southeast wholesaler merged with NSI, adding a strong customer base there which was supported with a newly constructed 125,000 square foot Florida manufacturing facility.

2002

In fact, survey results concluded that 23.8 million consumers used mailorder to purchase their gardening supplies in 2002.

2003
