Duties and Responsibilities:
· Working under the direct supervision of a Registered Nurse and/or an LPN, the CNA provides care to patients in the clinical setting by observing and reporting changes in the patient's condition, providing personal care and activities of daily living (ADL), monitoring intake and output (I&O), taking vital signs, performing blood glucose checks, assisting with feeding and ambulation.
· Patient populations include orthopedics, general surgery, urology, ophthalmology, and general medicine. The majority of patients have secondary chronic medical diagnoses.
· Performs a range of personal nursing care which includes feeding, walking, lifting, turning patients, providing related hygiene care to patients using specialized equipment receiving oxygen or suction therapy.
· Performs a range of diagnostic support duties which includes taking, recording and reporting to the nurse deviations in vital signs and change in patients' condition such as diabetic, uremic coma, insulin shock, gastro-intestinal hemorrhage and reporting them to the nurse or Assists the doctor in a variety of diagnostic examinations such as lumbar punctures, liver biopsy, bone marrow examinations and emergency procedures.
· Assembles necessary equipment and positions patients, collects, labels and transports specimens to laboratory, including specimens for acid-fast bacillus and closed drainage Checks patients frequently during and following procedures for changes in patient's condition. Escorts patients to and from diagnostic studies. Cleans and cares for equipment used in oxygen and suction therapy, frame beds and reports equipment in need of repair.
· Performs a range of treatment procedures that include changing simple as a sterile dressing. Gives cleansing and retention enemas as well as colostomy and non-medicated bladder Cares for patients with infection, communicable diseases and those in infection isolation. Performs nasal-pharyngeal, laryngeal and tracheal suction, tube feedings. Gives baths. Cares for patients receiving oxygen via cannula or mask as well as ventimask, patients with chest therapy and postural drainage. Cares for patients with condom catheters as well as indwelling Foley catheters. Administers BLS measures.
· Verbally provides information to the nurse for inclusion in the Nursing Care Plans. Graphs vital signs. Enters information about the patients' condition in the patients' chart. Assists with completion of patients' admission history.
