O’Reilly Media company history timeline

1984

Begun as a technical writing consulting firm, O’Reilly started publishing books about programming and computer technology in 1984.

1986

He left after a dispute with the network and joined ABC News in 1986 as a reporter for ABC World News Tonight.

1992

O’Reilly’s first popular book about the internet by Ed Krol named Whole Internet User’s Guide and Catalog, helped to popularize the WWW(World Wide Web) in 1992.

1996

In 1996 O’Reilly joined the Fox News Channel to anchor his own show, originally called The O’Reilly Report.

1998

Open Source Summit (originally called Freeware Summit) in 1998.

An early foray into fiction, Those Who Trespass: A Novel of Murder and Television (1998), gave way to a series of tracts reiterating his opposition to what he saw as the negative impact of “secular-liberal” thinking in American life.

2000

These books, known for the woodcuts of animals on the cover, became such a pervasive feature of the internet revolution that when, in 2000, the cover of Publisher’s Weekly declared, “The Internet Was Built with O’Reilly Books,” no one could take exception to the claim.

2002

MSNBC tried to counter Fox’s prime-time strategy with a liberal personality, Phil Donahue, in 2002, with considerably less success: O’Reilly was regularly outperforming Donahue by a factor of six.

2003

In 2003, after the dot-com bust, O’Reilly’s corporate goal was to reignite enthusiasm in the computer industry.

2005

2012

In 2012, O’Reilly spun out the Make: properties into a separate venture-backed company, Maker Media, headed up by former O’Reilly executive and Make: founder Dale Dougherty.

2014

In 2014, O’Reilly acquired Pearson’s interest in the joint venture, rebranding it O’Reilly online learning, which is now a wholly owned subsidiary of O’Reilly Media, based in Sebastopol, California.

2016

The news came amid a growing sexual harassment scandal at Fox News, which included the 2016 resignation of FNC Pres.

Today, key O’Reilly events include The Strata Data Conference, The Velocity Conference, and the invitation-only Foo Camp (“Friends of O’Reilly” unconference). In 2016, the company produced 19 conferences across the US, Europe, and Asia.

2017

While at FNC, O’Reilly faced allegations of sexual harassment, and in April 2017 The New York Times reported that more than $10 million had been paid to settle various lawsuits, though O’Reilly denied any wrongdoing.

2018

In 2018, the company rebranded Safari to O’Reilly online learning.

2019

O’Reilly acquired Katacoda in 2019, in this users can experiment with code on the website itself.

As recently as 2019, the flagship Maker Faire in San Mateo, California, drew over 130,000 attendees, and other Maker Faires around the world have collectively drawn millions.
