PURPOSE: The Health Physicist 3 provides Independent Environmental Assessment and Verification (IEAV) technical survey, document review, and special project support for complex decommissioning projects requiring special technical expertise in health physics. Additionally, this position plans projects and prepares reports on the results.
Responsibilities
Plans, performs, and oversees complex confirmatory/verification/characterization survey activities at facilities throughout the U.S. and sometimes internationally.
Organizes a team of 1-4 survey technicians in conducting surveys in accordance with established plans and program procedures.
Resolves on-site issues and modifies plans as necessary to accommodate site specific situations and conditions.
Travels an average of one week per month to around 50% of the work time. Travel can increase significantly during busy periods and can span multiple weeks at a time.
Prepares formal planning and reporting documentation including data quality objective development, survey and sampling design as described in the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM), and radiological data analysis and interpretation to compare to applicable release criteria. This requires knowledge and experience in areas related to decommissioning health physics.
Performs technical review of documents prepared by other organizations concerning characterization and remedial action activities.
Special projects could include:
Use of off-the-shelf computer software such as RESRAD, MCNP, and MicroShield.
Creating and quality control of calculations (e.g., spreadsheets).
General quality assurance activities.
Maintains radiation survey instrumentation including general maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting, and preparing equipment for survey trips.
Assures instrumentation is maintained and calibrated in accordance with program procedures.
Evaluates and recommends new equipment as appropriate.
Maintains all ORAU required and project-specific training and works independently in the office and at field sites after procedure sign-offs are complete.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Health Physics or related science and 5 to 7 years of job-related experience; or master's degree and 3 to 5 years of job-related experience. Health Physics Certification is preferred.
Experience in Health Physics/Radiation Safety is required.
Preferred experience includes:
Development of project planning documents, reports, procedures, etc.
Performing day-to-day interaction with customers, regulators and management.
Reviewing analytical data for adequacy/accuracy.
Experience working on field sites performing survey/sampling activities in Decontamination and Decommissioning (D&D) conditions.
Experience providing guidance and direction to field personnel.
Directly related experience performing duties involving:
Field and laboratory radiological instrumentation.
Radiation detection techniques.
Basic radiation protection and radiological instrumentation calibration.
Basic statistical analysis.
Detection system troubleshooting.
Instrument calibration.
Experience in electronics, health physics or a related field, radiation protection fundamentals, and effective technical or scientific writing (e.g., survey plans, procedures, reports, etc.).
Experience with radiation simulation codes such as RESRAD, MCNP, MicroShield, etc. to design shielding, calculate detector efficiencies, estimate radiological dose, etc.
Effective communication methods.
Experience with field sampling and survey procedures and radiation protection fundamentals such as described in the Multi-Agency Radiation Survey and Site Investigation Manual (MARSSIM).
Knowledge of radiation survey instrumentation operation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting.
Knowledge of standard practices for field documentation and records management.

Key Responsibilities:

* Plans, performs, and oversees complex confirmatory/verification/characterization survey activities at facilities throughout the U.S. and sometimes internationally.
* Organizes a team of 1-4 survey technicians in conducting surveys in accordance with established plans and program procedures.
* Resolves on-site issues and modifies plans as necessary to accommodate site specific situations and conditions.
* Travels an average of one week per month to around 50% of the work time. Travel can increase significantly during busy periods and can span multiple weeks at a time.

APPOINTMENT TYPE: Full-Time Regular (FTR) * SALARY RANGE: $71,552 - $99,529 is contingent upon contract award. PURPOSE: Toxicology Research Scientists exhibit a level of professional preparation, the responsibility for synthesizing moderately complex data and interpreting research findings, and participation in independent research or institutional research. The primary focus of this position is conducting complex research.
Provides a broad range of technical support on occupational and environmental worker health projects for DOE and other federal customers. Performs human health risk assessment and program evaluation tasks with a focus on exposures to toxic substances, safety and health standards and regulations. Collaborates with other project team members to interpret results of moderately complex studies and provide evaluations and assessments to customers.
Perform moderately complex data analysis, project initiation, research development and analysis, research and statistical consultation.
Responsibilities
* Conduct research and health risk assessments related to chemical, physical, and biological agents in the occupational environment. Evaluate human exposure parameters, environmental contamination levels, and engineering controls.
* Draft technical reports related to environmental and occupational exposures to toxic substances. Acquire/analyze/interpret quantitative and/or qualitative data. Report data and conclusions to external and internal audiences through peer-reviewed documents.
* Determine and implement analytic approaches, statistical models. Conduct literature reviews. Work collaboratively to assess occupational exposure data and information
* Participate in DOE site visits to collect data and information related to occupational exposures to toxic substances.
Qualifications
A bachelor's degree and 2-4 years of job-related experience. Master's and 0-2+ preferred. An equivalent combination of education and experience requiring similar knowledge, skills, abilities, and performing duties as described may be substituted for the minimum requirements
Requires significant experience in environment, safety, and health operations with particular emphasis on toxic substance exposures. Experience collecting, analyzing and interpreting environmental and occupational health data; evaluating compliance with regulatory requirements; managing data; drawing conclusions; making recommendations; writing reports; making presentations to clients; conducting literature reviews.
DOE work experience a plus.
Must have a knowledge of safety and environmental health; ability to gather relevant data for environmental and occupational health studies; ability to manage the data to meet quality specifications; ability to analyze and interpret moderately complex data. Must be knowledgeable in toxicology research and practice. Has an established track record of independent and/or collaborative/creative/scholarly work.
Ability to obtain a DOE Q Clearance.
