Oak Ridge Military Academy company history timeline

1852

Oak Ridge was established in 1852 by the Society of Friends (Quakers) as a "finishing school" for boys.

Since 1852, thousands of lives have been changed on these grounds - the unique relationships that are formed in this environment last a lifetime.

1854

By 1854 it had changed its name to the Oak Ridge Institute, admitting female students as well.

1899

Oak Ridge is accredited by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), and it was first accredited by SACS in 1899.

1914

The school faced closure in 1914 when a fire destroyed the main schoolhouse and chapel, but was rebuilt and continued on.

1929

1971

In 1971 the school became co-educational once more and changed its name to the Oak Ridge Academy.

1972

In 1972 Oak Ridge became the first military high school in the United States to admit female cadets.

1974

Dale Earnhardt Jr. (born 1974), race-car driver for NASCAR, has 26 NASCAR Sprint Cup Series wins and 246 Top-10 finishes.

1991

By 1991, at the time of state symbol adoption, the school had just under 200 cadets in grades 7-12.
