Summary:

The Pharmacy Technician assists pharmacists in the practice of pharmacy performing duties such as preparing, filling, and labeling medications for patients in the Hospital. As patient care assignments dictate, the Technician is responsive to the explicit need of all patients. When relevant, appropriate standards of practice and sensitivity to the psychosocial needs of these patient populations.

•Must be a high school graduate or equivalent
•Current State of Illinois Pharmacy Technician license
•Individuals must have EXCPT and or PTCB (Pharmacy Technician Certification Board) certification.
Preferred Job Qualifications:
•1-year hospital experience
•1 year retail pharmacy experience
•Currently a pharmacy student
•Graduated from an approved Pharmacy Tech Program
•ACPE IV certification
•Hazardous drug compounding certification
Physical Demands:
•Ability to lift/move 30-50 pounds
•Ability to stand for long periods of time (4+ hours) between breaks
•Ability to crouch when filling dispensing cabinets and bend or stand on a stool as necessary.

Responsibilities:
•Recognizes and identifies various classifications of medications, medication names, dosage forms, and routes of administration.
•Understand the pharmacy workflow for first doses, automated dispensing cabinet refills, cart fill, and batches.
•Understand the pharmacy workflow for medication returns and medication disposal.
•Responsible for the accurate interpretation of EPIC pharmacy labels:
•Responsible for the accurate and timely filling and delivery of patient-specific medications and Automated Dispensing Cabinet (ADC) restocks.
•Responsible for the preparation of sterile and non-sterile compounding and packaging:
•Responsible for answering phones, assisting callers with requests, and any other technical duties as assigned.
•Responsible for utilization of Epic for technical requests (i.e.: missing medications, ADCs out of stock, and responding to in-basket messages)
•Responsible for inventory, storage, and supply maintenance of assigned areas.
•Responsible for exchanging emergency carts and the completion of required documentation.
•Responsible for knowing the laws and regulations related to controlled substances.
•Maintain cleanliness of all equipment and work areas.
•Responsible for learning departmental quality assurance processes and hospital safety practices.
•Actively participates in various departmental committees and educational activities as assigned.

Description

Specialty Pharmacy Specific Responsibilities:
* Identify, research, and resolve issues and consumer complaints
* Check incoming prescriptions for completeness of all required information needed for processing
* Possess working knowledge of participating third-party payors and their requirements
* Establish and maintain open communication with pharmacy operations analysts regarding third-party billing issues and centralized procurement team regarding ordering and inventory matters
* Assists with prescription audits as needed
* Educate pharmacy staff regarding third-party billing policies and procedures as needed
* Answers and triages patient, provider, and third-party calls to appropriate individuals adhering to phone scripts in a courteous and professional manner
* Contact payers for lost medication, replacement, or vacation overrides
* Troubleshoot and resolve billing rejections and subsequently rebill claims to appropriate carriers for all commercial, federal, and state insurance plans
* Verify and accurately update patient demographic information in appropriate system(s)
* Document patient's insurance information in appropriate system(s)
* Refer and document any clinical questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health conditions requiring follow-up to a pharmacist
* Utilize case management and pharmacy software systems to schedule prescription refills and adjudicate claims

* Perform point-of-sale functions
* Understand and adhere to drug specific Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategies (REMS) requirement and identify what is needed for REMS fulfillment. Complete any REMS forms and authorizations required from the pharmacy. Print drug-specific medication guides to be dispensed with prescription when needed
* Complete prescription return-to-stock reports in a timely manner to meet compliance requirements
* Access, input, and retrieve information on pharmacy computer system to create labels for prescriptions
* Possess thorough understanding of the processes and procedures for shipping patient's medications and can independently resolve any complications
* Spend ≤ 5% of time on quality management of the program
* Supports the Northwestern Medicine Ambulatory Pharmacy team to enhance workflow for clinical pharmacy services throughout the network
* Responsible for providing access to medications for patients by completing Prior Authorization Requests, co-pay assistance programs, medication assistance programs, and benefits investigation
* Coordinates with third-party insurance, clinical staff, and patients to effectively process prior authorization requests for medications within the prescribed timelines
* Directly enrolls eligible patients into manufacturer patient assistance co-pay programs
Pharmacy Technician Specialist Job Responsibilities:
* Initiates and facilitates all drug purchasing for the pharmacy department.
* Monitors stock levels; evaluates previous purchasing and utilization patterns and anticipates needs.
* Maintains appropriate drug inventories.
* Coordinates the receipt of all deliveries, restocks storage areas and rotates stock as necessary.
* Develops and maintains sources and mechanisms to obtain drug supplies on an emergency basis interacting with local hospitals, pharmacies, alternative vendors, etc.
* Facilitates all returns and credits of expired or unneeded drugs.
* Takes appropriate action on drug recalls.
* Processes inter-department billing. Performs monthly pharmacy unit inspections.

* Rectifies with vendors all problems associated with receipt of orders, back orders, shipping errors and incorrect pricing.
* Maintains purchasing records including invoices, purchase orders, catalogs and historical records.

* Assists in the development and training of new pharmacy technicians.
* Proficient in performing all duties of pharmacy technician, including sterile compounding of IV admixtures, injections and infusions.

* Works with the pharmacy manager or director to identify areas of improvement in the workflow or inventory control of the pharmacy.

Job Description
General Summary:
Prepares parenteral injections, antineoplastics, IV admixtures, cytotoxic agents and parenteral nutrition solutions at least 70% of the scheduled shifts. Selects and prepares oral, rectal and topical medications. Fills, exchanges and credits unit-dose carts and processes new medication orders.
Essential Job Functions:
Prepares parenteral medications and large volume parenteral, as labels demand following strict aseptic technique in the manipulation of ampules, vials, syringes, bottles, and bags.
Performs the measurements and completes the mathematical calculations necessary for preparing parenteral products.
Following established guidelines prepares parenteral antineoplastic medications. Works at least 1 week per quarter in the Hematology satellite. Utilizes an electronic formulator, prepares parenteral nutrition solutions.
Cleans hoods and calibrates pumps according to established procedures.
Stocks additive room and notes low stock items on requisition sheet. Notifies Purchasing Agent of unusual drug usages. Inspects stock of assigned areas monthly to ensure that medications are stored properly and are in-date.
Maintains physical appearance of the IV additive room.
Trains technicians on aseptic techniques.
Participates in peer evaluation and evaluation of other pharmacy employees.
Performs other tasks as necessary to provide delivery of pharmacy services, including processing of new medication orders, filling, exchanging, and crediting carts and selecting and preparing oral, rectal and topical medications.
Performs job functions adhering to service principles with customer service focus of innovation, service excellence and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers and others.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
High school diploma or GED equivalent required. Completion of two years of college with at least one general mathematics course preferred.
Licensure or eligibility for licensure as Registered Pharmacy Technician in the State of Illinois. Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB).
Pharmacy students currently enrolled in pharmacy school (PharmD program) are excluded from certification requirements.

Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
Replaces returned medications to appropriate locations, rotating the inventory and checking for expired medications.
Controls and checks medications outside of the department by performing unit inspections and emergency cart checks.
Appropriately handles controlled substances, including maintaining security, reconciling controlled substance dispenses and accounting for transactions of expired, waste and return.
Enters patient charges and credit information into the computer.
Maintains logs, records and other required documentation.
Qualifications
Required:

Pharmacy Technician License (IDFPR)
Certified Pharmacy Technician (CPhT) certification through PTCB or NHA required for all licensed after 2008 (within 6 months of hire or sooner if required by IL pharmacy practice act)

Summary

Job Description
The Pharmacy Technician:
Dispenses medication to fill prescription requests for inpatient Unit Dose Cassettes and SRAlab sites of care.
Prepacks tablets, capsules, and liquids under the supervision of a Registered Pharmacist and according to policy.
Prepares and delivers injections and I.V. admixtures.
Orders medications and supplies from wholesalers and other pharmaceutical sources, inspecting incoming merchandise for accuracy.
Monitors stock for expiration dates, preparing returns for outdated drugs to wholesalers and manufacturers for credit.
Maintains cleanliness of the Pharmacy and equipment.

High school diploma or equivalent required.
Pharmacy Technician Certification required. Pharmacy students in good standing at an ACPE approved school of pharmacy are not required to be certified but must show proof of current enrollment.
Current Illinois Pharmacy Technician license.
Minimum 1 year of hospital based experience.
Experience adding measured drugs or nutrients to intravenous solutions under sterile conditions to prepare intravenous (IV) preparation under pharmacist supervision.
Strong mathematical ability to interpret prescription orders, dispense medication including compounding of tablets to liquid.
Strong customer service and communication skills needed to interact with patients, coworkers, healthcare professionals, and vendors.
Time management and multi-tasking ability required to work in a fast paced, time sensitive environment to ensure timely delivery of daily cart and orders as needed.
Demonstrated follow through, decision making, and analytical skills required to address discrepancies, missing medications and ordering new medications.
Experience with Microsoft Office, Cerner and Talyst auto carousel, preferred.
Ability to push delivery carts weighing up to 40 lbs., lift and stock items for delivery and inventory control.

Job Description

Acts as a member of the clinical team to obtain the most complete and accurate medication history possible for patients throughout the hospital and emergency department
Obtains medication history in a timely manner to ensure efficient transitions in the continuum of care
Interviews patients, utilizing all resources to obtain complete and accurate medication history, along with obtaining and clarifying allergy information
Demonstrates exceptional communication skills with all members of the care team and the public, including patients and patients' representatives
Reviews secondary sources of information to obtain medication histories if unable to obtain directly from patient, or to verify the accuracy of a patient-provided history
Ensures that all medication histories are of the highest quality, and communicates any potential concerns with the covering clinical pharmacist to prevent medication errors
Documents medication histories, and other pertinent information, in a clear and concise manner
Maintains a dedication to improving patient safety and reducing medication errors at transitions in the continuum of care
Attention to detail, confidentiality, and complete documentation are core responsibilities within this role
Demonstrates competency with electronic health record (EHR) documentation and medication knowledge necessary to complete the role

Assists in ordering, receiving, unpacking and storing pharmaceuticals and supplies in appropriate locations.
Replaces returned medications to appropriate locations, rotating the inventory and checking for expired medications.

Appropriately handles controlled substances, including maintaining security, reconciling controlled substance dispenses and accounting for transactions of expired, waste and return.
Enters patient charges and credit information into the computer.
Maintains logs, records and other required documentation.
