Oakland Park, FL company history timeline

1922

In 1922, with the Florida land boom in full swing, the Barkdull Investment Company planned a housing development east of Dixie Highway and north of the North Fork of Middle River.

1923

In 1923, a Miami development company formally announced that the area known as Colahatchee would, from here on out, be known as the subdivision of Oakland Park.

1925

The Oakland Park Elementary School (which, incidentally, is on the National Register of Historic Places) had been built in 1925, and remains open.

By 1925, Oakland Park had developed into a thriving community in a part of the country that was rapidly expanding.

1926

All of south Florida was bursting with development, but the September 1926 hurricane, which devastated the area, burst the prosperity balloon.

By 1926, Floranada had an all-time high population, a thriving economy, and several buildings and attractions in the works.

1929

About the author: Darleen Mitchell, was the first resident baby born in Oakland Park after its incorporation in 1929.
