Summary/Objective The Austin Company performs design-build work for industrial and specialized commercial markets. The Electrical Intern actively works with in-house engineers, architects, and construction departments to assist with ongoing functions. Additionally, each intern participates in an interactive intern-specific project requiring coordination amongst the various engineering and architectural design disciplines. Throughout the summer, the interns choose a project, decide a site location, and bring their project idea to life with engineering design and collaboration efforts. Finally, a proposal and presentation are assembled, in which the interns pitch their design proposal to the architectural, engineering, construction and marketing professionals in the office. By the end of the summer internship, students gain an understanding for the project cycle. Our mission is to accelerate design and engineering processes in the automotive industry. The Internship We are seeking a highly motivated and talented PhD research intern to join our Future Product Innovation team and push the envelope on what is possible with Generative AI technologies in the domain of automotive product design. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in CAD Generation and Machine Learning or related fields, with demonstrated interest in design and generative AI. In this project, the intern will develop 3D shape generation techniques with applications to CAD such as point cloud to CAD and image to CAD. We will match the intern with mentors based on their experience. Over the course of the project, in addition to Future Product Innovation group meetings, the intern will also participate in all Human-Centered AI division meetings and meetings with stakeholders from relevant Toyota business groups. The intern will be exposed to how interdisciplinary industrial research works and learn from our team as well as the other interns in our division. Furthermore, the intern will engage in strategy discussions about how their research connects to business impact at Toyota. Responsibilities * In collaboration with your mentor and the other researchers in the department, you will scope the project to align to the core research efforts. * Be the primary driver of the technical plan (e.g., model development, analysis plan) with regular feedback from mentors. * Execute the project using TRI resources. * Present the project's approach and findings in research meetings. Qualifications * Currently enrolled in a PhD program in Computer Science, Machine Learning (or related fields). * Experience working with CAD data such as B-rep and step-file Experience working with relevant libraries such as pythonocc-core, Shapely, TriMesh, Blender. * Experience with deep generative models for CAD generation applications. * Track record of executing research projects including publications at top venues including but not limited to CVPR, ICCV, TOG, SIGGRAPH, NeurIPS. * Desire to work on challenging open-ended research projects. * Demonstrated ability to work autonomously while soliciting feedback. * Excellent communication and teamwork skills. The intern will work with real in situ cryo ET datasets generated using focused ion beam (FIB) milling and advanced electron microscopy techniques. In close collaboration with experimental and computational partners, the intern will contribute to data quality assessment, automated annotation (including segmentation and particle picking), benchmarking of computational methods, and workflow documentation. The project emphasizes applying and stress-testing automated analysis tools on challenging biological datasets to support scalable, reproducible cryo ET analysis. By the end of the internship, the intern will have helped deliver a tested and well-documented computational analysis pipeline tailored to cilia cryo ET data, along with clear benchmarks of automated method performance on in situ samples. The Opportunity The Biohub in San Francisco is seeking highly motivated PhD-level students to join our 10-week Summer Internship Program, running from June 16, 2026, to August 21, 2026. Computational Biology Interns are embedded within active research teams and contribute directly to ongoing scientific programs. Each project is thoughtfully scoped to be achievable within the internship timeframe while delivering meaningful scientific and technical impact. Interns will spend the summer immersed in real-world research alongside biomedical researchers, research scientists, data scientists, and engineers. In addition to gaining hands-on experience in computational analysis and biological data interpretation, interns will develop critical professional skills-including scientific communication, problem-solving, and cross-disciplinary collaboration-and will have opportunities to build relationships with scientists who provide mentorship, guidance, and career insight. Available Project Areas (Summer 2026) Computational Cryo-Electron Tomography Analysis for Cilia Biology This project focuses on developing and evaluating computational workflows for analyzing cryo-electron tomography (cryo ET) data from primary cilia-disease-relevant organelles central to cellular signaling. The intern will work with real in situ cryo ET datasets generated using focused ion beam (FIB) milling and advanced electron microscopy techniques. In close collaboration with experimental and computational partners, the intern will contribute to data quality assessment, automated annotation (including segmentation and particle picking), benchmarking of computational methods, and workflow documentation. The project emphasizes applying and stress-testing automated analysis tools on challenging biological datasets to support scalable, reproducible cryo ET analysis. By the end of the internship, the intern will have helped deliver a tested and well-documented computational analysis pipeline tailored to cilia cryo ET data, along with clear benchmarks of automated method performance on in situ samples.
