As an Occupational Therapist, you will provide direct therapy to students in Grades K-12 with special needs including but not limited to development, implementation and maintenance of designated instructional programs, conducting regular assessments, and developing or adjusting individualized education plan (IEP) goals as needed.
‖ Responsibilities Include:
Implementing student-specific occupational therapy services as outlined in each Individualized Education Program (IEP), including adherence to frequency, duration, and service location requirements.
Completing comprehensive assessment reports within state- and district-mandated timelines to support data-driven educational planning.
Communicating evaluation results and individualized therapy recommendations to families, educational staff, students (as appropriate), and related agencies, with appropriate consent from the student's legal guardian.
Planning and developing targeted therapeutic goals that are educationally relevant and seamlessly integrated into each student's academic program.
Conducting ongoing reassessments and modifying therapy objectives based on evolving student needs and progress toward educational outcomes.
Monitoring the fidelity of therapy implementation and collaborating with and training educators, paraprofessionals, and other support staff involved in occupational therapy interventions.
Documenting student progress through timely and accurate reporting in alignment with district standards and program guidelines.
Participating in IEP meetings to share data-informed insights, progress updates, and goal recommendations to support individualized planning.
Creating a supportive, safe, and developmentally appropriate learning environment tailored to each student's sensory, physical, and cognitive needs.
Evaluating progress toward therapy goals and determining when students are ready to transition from or discontinue occupational therapy services.
Facilitating professional development sessions and in-service trainings to enhance the capacity of occupational therapy staff and interdisciplinary team members.
Participating in training school personnel on the effective use of assistive technology and adaptive equipment, while maintaining proper documentation of use and outcomes.
Attending and actively engaging in all required team meetings, trainings, and professional collaboration forums.
Performing additional duties as assigned, contributing positively to the overall success of the student services team.
‖ Qualifications Required:
Master's degree or higher in occupational therapy or a closely related field of study.
Licensed currently or in the process of obtaining a state occupational therapy (OT) credential.
Ability to obtain and maintain certification in company approved crisis management (PCM) training.
Prior experience and/or highly knowledgeable in providing occupational therapy services, preferably in an educational or classroom setting.
Prior experience and/or knowledge in special education services and compliance, particularly for students with severe learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorders, emotional behavioral disorders and/or other related disabilities.
Prior experience and/or knowledge in working with students with individualized education plans (IEP's).
Proven success in developing and implementing effective treatment plans for students with diverse needs.
Proficiency in providing motivation and having critical conversations with students that help move them toward realistic goals.
Ability to think and act quickly and calmly in an emergency and make independent decisions.
Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of staff members, students, parents and the public.
Advanced oral and written communication, organization, conflict resolution, multitasking, problem solving, and decision-making ability.
Well-versed in the use of relevant technology including experience with computers, Microsoft Office Suite, database entry and basic office equipment.

SUMMARY: Under direction, supervises and instructs entry to journey level professional therapists, supportive personnel and students. Assists in the development of special techniques and equipment, and provides and supervises the provision of the full-range of occupational therapy services in rehabilitation programs treating physically disabled and emotionally ill persons at Alameda Health System facilities. The Occupational Therapists II typically carry a caseload in addition to their supervisional responsibilities. Performs related duties as required.
DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: NOTE: Following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.
1. Attends and participates in staff conferences, training, and in-service sessions, explains occupational therapy to other disciplines and coordinates programs.
2. Attends rehabilitation conferences and discusses the status and progress rehabilitation patients with physicians and personnel of other disciplines involved, such as physical therapy, nursing, and psychology.
3. Interviews patients and administers the appropriate tests and/or evaluations to assess physical and/or psycho-social dysfunction. These evaluations may include but are not limited to: range of motion, muscle testing, sensory integration, perceptual abilities, coordination, activities of daily living, pre-vocational, home evaluation, equipment needs, feeding and pre-feeding evaluations, and interpersonal relationship skills.
4. Keeps informed of current trends and new developments in the field; read the professional literature; and participates in professional activities in the field.
5. Keeps records and prepares reports on patient treatment and progress and coordinates treatment with other services, involved in patient care; confers with the Chief Occupational Therapist regarding progress and problems.
6. May act for the Assistant Chief Occupational Therapist in their absence; assumes administrative duties as assigned; assists the Chief in assigning duties to professional and supportive staff; communicates departmental needs.
7. May lead an out-patient group of mentally disturbed patients in a program designed to gain or re-gain maximum mental capabilities.
8. Plans an appropriate treatment program utilizing selected methods to achieve the desired treatment objectives and goals for patient rehabilitation. These methods may include but are not limited to: therapeutic exercises and functional activities to promote muscle return, sensory re-education, muscle facilitation, perceptual-motor integration, activities of daily living and transfer training, prosthetic training of the upper extremity, orthotic and adaptive equipment fabrication, and community re-orientation.
9. Reviews referrals by physicians to note diagnoses, cautions, treatment ordered and results desired.
10. Supervises, orients, trains, instructs and assists in the evaluation of entry and journey level professional staff and supportive staff; assists in personnel selection; delegates cases to assigned staff while maintaining responsibility for an assigned program; carries a caseload of patients in addition to supervisorial responsibilities.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Possession of a Bachelor's Degree, certification or Master's Degree from an approved school of occupational therapy.
Minimum Experience: One year of full-time experience in the class of Occupational Therapist I with Alameda Health System; OR two years of full-time experience as an occupational therapist in another facility in physical disabilities or psycho-social dysfunction.
Required Licenses/Certifications: BLS - Basic Life Support Certification issued by the American Heart Association. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
Required Licenses/Certifications: CPI -Crisis Prevention Intervention Training (required for all positions at John George Psychiatric Pavilion; and certain positions in the Emergency Department).
Required Licenses/Certifications: Current Licensure with the California Board of Occupational Therapy as an Occupational Therapist.
Pay: $76.77 / Hour
The pay range for this position reflects the base pay scale for the role at Alameda Health System. Final compensation will be determined based on several factors, including but not limited to a candidate's experience, education, skills, licensure and certifications, departmental equity, applicable collective bargaining agreements, and the operational needs of the organization. The Occupational Therapist will work across multiple (2-4) Rocketship school sites under the direct supervision of the Associate Director of Occupational Therapy. Rocketship's occupational therapists are responsible for providing both direct and indirect support to students, families, and staff members in order to ensure high-quality programming for students, particularly those with disabilities.
Key Responsibilities Essential functions:
* Lead specialized assessments related to sensory-motor development; write quality, compliant assessment reports
* Attend IEP meetings; present assessment findings to the team
* Develop IEP goals and objectives, as well as intervention plans
* Provide high-quality and evidence based occupational therapy services
* Assist in the implementation of assessment recommendations as needed
* Work with parents to build knowledge of disability and inclusive support for students with disabilities

Primary Responsibilities:
-Implements therapeutic activities to address deficits in the area/s of fine motor, visual motor, sensory motor, and visual perceptual as indicated on the IEP (504 plan).
-Administers, interprets, and writes up assessments in the areas of fine motor, visual motor, sensory motor and visual perceptual how these areas affect a student's academic performance.
-Instructs students, teachers, parents and other involved persons for the purpose of supporting the student's IEP (or 504) plan.
-Consults with teachers, parents, other personnel and/or outside professionals for the purpose of providing requested information, developing plans (IEP, 504) for services and/or making recommendations.
-Participates in meetings, processes, etc. for the purpose of ensuring that state standards and/or federal mandates are achieved (IEP or 504 process).
-Assesses/recommends need for adaptive equipment and/or environmental modifications as needed for successful implementation of a student's functional goals.
-Researches resources and methods (e.g. intervention and treatment techniques, assessment tools and methods, community resources, etc.) for the purpose of determining the appropriate approach for addressing a student's functional goals.
Requirements
Essential Functions
The essential functions and duties of the Occupational Therapist are as follows:
Direct Service - Provide one-on-one interactions as well as small group services which may involve elements of sensory regulation including sensory processing, proprioceptive, vestibular and tactile work in order to produce an adaptive response to increase functioning in the classroom.
Assessments - Conduct routine and specialized assessments of students on the case load to ensure that they are receiving the appropriate level of support and that their advancement is being tracked accordingly.
IEP - As needed, provide timely quarterly information and annual IEP documentation which includes triennial assessments when necessary. This includes the ongoing tracking of progress on goals and the presentation of the IEP information at the official meeting.
Knowledge, Skill and Experience
The candidate must possess the following minimum requirements for consideration as a certified Occupational Therapist
Education - Masters in Occupational Therapy
Certifications - A valid certification from the California Board of Occupational Therapy as an Occupational Therapist.
Experience - Prefer two or more years working in the field with at least 1 year of direct experience with individuals in special education affected by severe Autism or similar developmental disability.
Communication Skills -- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including speaking, writing, listening, motivating, inspiring, collaborating, delegating. Self-starter and team player.
Organizational Skills -- Strong organizational skills with the ability to track and follow-up with multiple, simultaneous projects.
Technical Skills Strong understanding of relevant methodologies and practices for providing direct service education to individuals with Autism or similar developmental disabilities which includes methods for behavioral management.
Physical Requirements:
Pushing, Pulling and Lifting - The individual must be able to lift and or push at least 45lbs. with assistance in order to carry necessary presentation materials or specialized equipment to external sites on occasion.
Student Behavior Management - The OT must be able to properly demonstrate and implement behavior management techniques when needed. This training is provided to all staff.
Office Work - This position requires that the OT be able to conduct a variety of office work including typing on a computer.
Personal Requirements:
Must have the ability to work independently and in cooperation with others.
Must enjoy working with and relating to people effectively.
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
