Odessa Fire Chief company history timeline

1879

The village of Odessa was located in 1879 by the the first settler, A.D. Beardsley, with the first building being erected in November of that year.

J.R. Meier, who learned the trade of blacksmith in his native Switzerland came to Odessa and began his business in 1879.

1881

Beardsley’s place when he moved to a farm in 1881.

1901

ODESSA – As might be recalled by serious history buffs, The Odessa Record was first published in May 1901; however, the Harrington Citizen often carried news of Odessa.

1921

7, 1921 The opening dance at the New Community Hall given by the Odessa Concert Band New Year’s eve was one of the largest ever held in Odessa and also one of the most enjoyable.

1936

In 1936 the first new truck ever purchased by the department arrived, it was an International truck.

1937

Then in 1937 he joined the city. "They didn't have a lot of work or men then, and they just shifted you around," Meadows recalls.

1939

On June 6, 1939 the Odessa City Council voted to inform Chief J.A. Langley that his services were no longer needed.

1945

In 1945, "the town was growing too much" (It had a population of about 12,000 then) and Meadows went to the City Council and ended the voluntary fire department.

1949

Bill Childress joined the department as a firefighter on May 5th, 1949.

1950

He was promoted to the rank of Captain in September 1950.

1951

In the Past Compiled by Georgia Smith for The Times January 4th, 1951 70 Years ago New Year Storm Lashes Region The New Year came to Davenport bringing with it the winter’s first storm.

1956

During October of 1956 Childress was promoted to Assistant Chief which is known today as Battalion Chief.

1958

Then in November 1958, Childress was promoted to Deputy Chief, which today is known as Assistant Chief.

1959

James Wiggs went to work for the Odessa Fire Department on October 1st, 1959.

1962

By the time Childress took over the Fire Department in 1962, the department was beginning to feel the heat of more and more fires, for the department was now making over a thousand call per year.

1963

The Fire Department strength by 1963 was 108 firefighters and 7 fire stations.

1970

Odessa was the first in the state to have the 911 Emergency Dialing System which began on April 1st, 1970.

He was promoted to Captain on September 1st, 1970, then on his 17th year on the department James Wiggs was promoted to Assistant Fire Chief.

1977

Fire Chief Roger Boyd began his career with the Odessa Fire/Rescue July 12, 1977.

2001

In 2001 Boyd was promoted to the rank of Assistant Fire Chief where he served as the Operations Chief for 6 years.

2008

In 2008, the fire department moved into the new fire barn located at 111 E First Street, in the village of Odessa.

2022
