The company began its healthcare innovations with the development of x-rays. “A 50,000,000-volt biased betatron producing high-energy x-rays is expected to have value in cancer research,” it says in the GE 1948 report.

1975

In 1975, the company’s report was proud to announce that General Electric was the worldwide leader in diagnostic imaging equipment used by physicians in diagnosis and treatment.

1978

Milipitas, California-based Diasonics had come into existence in 1978, growing quickly.

1983

In 1983, OEC was purchased by Diasonics, Inc. and became OEC-Diasonics, a subsidiary of that company.

1984

But a year later, in February 1984, Forbes reported that the price per share had dropped to $6.50, and the company expected a $60 to $65 million pre-tax loss.

1993

1996

OEC finished 1996 with a stronger balance sheet than ever.

1997

Joseph Pepper replaced Naumann-Etienne as CEO in 1997.

1998

As part of the transaction, OEC, which had 1998 revenue of $189 million, granted GE the option to acquire newly issued shares of the company’s common stock, representing 15% of OEC’s outstanding shares.

2000

Soon GE Healthcare developed specific medical exam devices for women, like the full field digital mammography which was introduced for the first time in 2000; an important development in the fight against breast cancer because of the high quality resolution imaging.
