  • 2026 Communications/Marketing - Local Government Summer Intern

    The MORPC Local Government Summer Internship Program provides the opportunity for undergraduate and graduate students to obtain practical work experience with a local government within MORPC's 15-county region to prepare them for possible careers in public service. MORPC coordinates the recruitment and placement of students to match each host's request; hosts make the final hiring decision and provide an hourly wage. Interns work for a host for a minimum of 16 hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week for a 10- to 14-week period, which means there are both part-time and full-time positions available. The summer 2026 internship program will begin on May 12th and will end on August 14th. Interns gain applicable knowledge to enhance classroom learning by working with current government professionals throughout Central Ohio and acquire insights into the services provided by a regional planning commission. Interns also can attend monthly commission meetings as well as special MORPC-sponsored events and are paired with a MORPC staff member to serve as their mentor during the summer internship program. Previous Communications/Marketing interns have gained experience using Adobe Suite (Audition, Premiere Pro, InDesign, and Illustrator specifically), Canva, CivicSend, Canto, Hootsuite, Meta Business Suite, UKG Ready, Microsoft 365, and other software programs on the job. Specific past assignments include: * Writing and distributing articles, press releases, and a summer newsletter * Building a social media calendar and creating posts in accordance with said calendar * Developing a social media strategy and policy while communicating in brand voice * Drafting graphics in addition to performing interviews for social media, including posts, story highlights, reels, etc. * Taking and editing photos/videos to serve as a media library to be used for future events, summer camps, and park promotion as well as department spotlights and internal or external newsletters * Preparing for, facilitating, and engaging with summer camps that serve over 100 local middle schoolers * Grant writing assistance * Activities related to event management/promotion/execution * Editing websites with current data and other duties as assigned Qualifications Students must meet the following requirements: * 30 hours of completed college coursework * Interest in public service careers * GPA 3.0 or higher (preferred) * Legally eligible to work in the United States * Reliable transportation to and from work * Attend a Central Ohio college OR attend other college and have access to local housing Benefits All MORPC internships are paid opportunities!     ABOUT FRANKLIN COUNTY MUNICIPAL COURT The Franklin County Municipal Court is the largest and busiest municipal court in the State of Ohio. The Court has fourteen judges in the General Division and one judge in the Environmental Division. Judges preside over civil, criminal, and traffic cases and conduct both jury and court trials. The Court's jurisdiction includes traffic cases, misdemeanor criminal cases, and civil cases where the amount at issue is $15,000 or less. The Environmental Division has exclusive jurisdiction to enforce local codes and regulations affecting real property, such as fire and building codes. The geographic jurisdiction of the Court is all of Franklin County and those portions of the City of Columbus that extend beyond the boundaries of Franklin County. Despite its jurisdiction and name, the Franklin County Municipal Court is the judicial branch of the City of Columbus government. JOB PURPOSE AND OVERVIEW The Pretrial and Probation Services Department consists of approximately 120 employees. The mission of Pretrial Services is to promote community safety and pretrial success through research-informed recommendations and supervision services that maximize court appearance, remove barriers to fair and efficient justice, and promote harm reduction. The mission of Probation Services is to promote community safety by reducing recidivism, changing offender behavior, and fostering accountability through the effective use of evidence-based practices. Department functions include pretrial, investigation, and supervision services. Supervision structures are determined by risk and need and include all types of cases referred by the judges of the Court. The staff operates specialized caseloads, including domestic violence, sexual offenses, soliciting, mental health, work release, and electronic monitoring. The probation staff strives to stay current and relevant with the ongoing goal of being an evidence-based organization. A SERT probation officer is under the general direction of a chief probation officer and the immediate direction of a SERT probation officer supervisor. A SERT probation officer's primary responsibilities are to conduct fieldwork, assist with transports and arrests, investigate, interview, assess, case plan, provide interventions, and manage a defendant's compliance with court orders and required programming to promote public safety and reduce recidivism. SERT probation officers routinely communicate a defendant's supervision compliance with the assigned judge and work closely with criminal justice partners, local law enforcement agencies, and community resources. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES OF THE POSITION Promote, model, and abide by the Vision, Mission, policies, and procedures of the Probation Department Administration of the Ohio Risk Assessment System (ORAS) and other identified assessment tools to ensure appropriate supervision placement, intervention, and programming. Develop an appropriate supervision plan to address the court's requirements and a defendant's assessed and identified needs. Supervise and support defendants through the behavior-change process, skills and goal attainment, and compliance with court-ordered supervision conditions, including teaching new skills, role-playing with defendants, and applying motivational interviewing skills. Perform field work as needed; notify the Court of the defendant's compliance with supervision requirements and attend court hearings when required. Ability to promote a positive presence in the community with defendants and their families. Conduct field visits, transport, searches, and field arrests of defendants. Conduct community and agency site visits with collateral organizations and treatment providers as needed. Conduct investigations for the Court and prepare written reports to assist judges in determining appropriate sentences, release conditions, or the sealing of criminal offense records, as assigned. Complete thorough, well-written reports detailing an individual's supervision progress and including thoughtful and informed recommendations. Supervise specialized caseloads consisting of environmental compliance issues; defendants convicted of domestic violence or related charges; substance-using defendants; defendants with mental-health or developmental disability considerations; defendants convicted of sex offenses; or defendants ordered to a period of electronic monitoring or work release. Maintain accurate, current, and thorough documentation and records. Participate in activities that enhance the department and Court, the individual units within the department, and the officer's professional development. Active participation in required training and professional development events around evidence-based practices in community corrections and behavioral health issues, per department standards and as deemed appropriate. Qualify and maintain OPOTA certification to carry a department-issued firearm while conducting fieldwork. Shall successfully complete a firearm requalification program approved by the Executive Director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission per the rules adopted by the Attorney General pursuant to section 109.743 of the Revised Code. Properly maintain and secure firearms based on the department's maintenance schedule. Qualify and maintain OPOTA certification to carry a department-issued taser while conducting fieldwork. Maintain a professional demeanor during stressful situations. Maintain proficient and applicable certification with all job and training requirements. Develop and sustain productive working relationships with local law enforcement. Perform other tasks assigned and may fulfill roles of other positions in other departments of the Court as needed. QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university with core coursework in areas related to criminal justice, criminology, corrections, psychology, social work, or a related field. One (1) year of experience involving community supervision of defendants and case planning. One (1) year of experience conducting fieldwork in community corrections or a law enforcement setting. Must have successfully completed a basic firearm training program that is approved by the executive director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission or can do so within 120 days of employment. Must have successfully completed a taser training program that is approved by the executive director of the Ohio Peace Officer Training Commission or can do so within 120 days of employment. Must be able to successfully complete firearm qualifications utilizing the department-issued firearm and requalify annually. Must be able to successfully complete taser qualifications utilizing the department-issued taser and requalify annually. Must be able to successfully obtain a medical and psychological recommendation to carry a firearm for the department. Must successfully pass urinalysis initial screening and be subject to random urinalysis while employed as a SERT officer. The ability to demonstrate and apply basic knowledge of mental health, trauma, and substance abuse issues. Become trained and/or certified to perform the ORAS and other department risk and need-assessment tools. Successful completion of the state probation officer certification and training process within one year of hire if not currently certified Meet the eligibility requirements and pass the tests required to become certified to use Law Enforcement Automated Data Systems, National Crime Information Center, Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation (LEADS), Federal Bureau of Investigation, and Interstate Identification Information Systems computer information systems. Willingness and ability to be trained and maintain certification in the department's field-safety training program, including but not limited to defensive tactics, verbal de-escalation techniques, and first aid/CPR, to engage with defendants in the community. Ability to assess and supervise defendants effectively (e.g., assess and resolve problems, motivate defendants toward prosocial support and activities, and facilitate interventions that assist defendants in changing their thinking and behavior) Ability to appropriately respond to both pro-social and non-compliant behavior in a way that promotes public safety, accountability, and behavior change. Effective oral and written communication and interviewing skills (e.g., ability to listen effectively, obtain sensitive information, explain complex issues in a comprehensible manner, and prepare accurate and logical reports relevant to a defendant) Ability to make informed and thoughtful recommendations and decisions. Knowledge of the criminal justice system and current research trends in the field of community corrections to work effectively within the court and community corrections field. Ability to appropriately receive and follow supervisory feedback, coaching, and direction. Demonstrate resilience and flexibility in a high-paced, dynamic work environment.     Purpose The Human Resources Director is responsible for setting the daily and strategic direction of the Human Resources Department in alignment with Metro Parks' mission, vision, values, and goals. This includes managing the HR team engaged in all aspects of HR functions while providing technical guidance to Metro Parks' leadership and other management teams. Just as important as "what" is performed is "how" these duties are performed as collaboration, team building, and navigating employee and manager relations are vital to success in this role. Example of Duties Directly supervises, often through specialized managers, Human Resources staff and performs duties related to assigning work, scheduling, evaluating, training, approving/denying leave, administering discipline, approving timecards, etc. Engages in all aspects of the employee lifecycle, including recruitment, retention, application, hiring, onboarding, training, performance management, benefits administration, employee relations, compliance with labor laws, background checks and investigations, and overall workforce wellbeing; communicates with applicants; ensures fair and equal hiring processes; collects, maintains, and analyzes data to evaluate Metro Parks' recruitment, employee populations, and diversity efforts. Meets regularly with Metro Parks' Directors to discuss recruitment, benefits, policies/procedures, training, performance evaluations, and other related Human Resources topics; establishes plans of action based upon organizational priorities and needs. Manages human resources related policy & review, amending existing and writing to new policies/procedures as needed. Provides advice and consultation to the management team and employees on dispute resolution, performance issues, and the interpretation of correct application of policies and procedures. Mediates employee relations issues and directs, assists and/or handles disciplinary actions. Manages the recruitment and hiring process for all positions within the organization; coordinates with the management team to define recruitment needs including timelines, methods, processes, and tools. Oversees and participates in the screening of applicants, writing of interview questions, evaluation of applicants, and the steps surrounding offers of employment. Serves as the liaison to Franklin County for the purposes of benefits, wellness, worker's compensation & risk management, and unemployment compensation benefits and processes; problem-solves issues that arise in these areas between Metro Parks and Franklin County; responds to requests for information. Reviews benefits options and stays abreast of trends and changes in benefits to ensure Metro Parks' benefits are in line with industry standards and are best designed for recruitment and retention; solicits quotes for benefits programs if needed. Serves as the chief negotiator in the collective bargaining process; maintains good working relationships with the union and members of the bargaining unit; guides both employees and the management team in the grievance and conflict resolution processes. Develops and administers the budgets for the Human Resources Department. Serves as FMLA administrator for Metro Parks', overseeing the FMLA process and all of its components. Interprets and applies FMLA to situations presented and ensures coordination with related policies and procedures. Serves as ADA coordinator for the employees of Metro Parks, meeting with employees to discuss reasonable accommodations, making workplace assessments, and providing guidance on ADA compliance issues. Manages Metro Parks' Drug & Alcohol program, coordinating training, making determinations for necessary post-accident and reasonable suspicion testing, and ensuring consistent compliance. Directs and manages special personnel programs including the high school internship program, job fairs, community outreach employment opportunities, etc. Writes summaries, evaluates programs, and communicates with other organizations. Works closely with Metro Parks payroll personnel to ensure the application of timecard, payroll, and leave functions is in compliance with policies and procedures; works to resolve issues; interprets application of policy to employee scenarios as it relates to pay and leave usage. Prepares monthly reports for the Board of Park Commissioners; attends monthly Board Meetings of Park Commissioners; advises Park Commissioners on relevant human resources issues. Assesses needs for training, arranges for or conducts training in both human resources or specialty topics. Creates training materials, presentations, and evaluates training programs; maintains training records. Ensures compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and Local Laws governing HR functions, payroll, and benefits. Manages, implements and trains on Metro Parks' performance evaluation and salary administration programs. MORPC coordinates the recruitment and placement of students to match each host's request; hosts make the final hiring decision and provide an hourly wage. Interns work for a host for a minimum of 16 hours to a maximum of 40 hours per week for a 10 to 14-week period, which means there are both part-time and full-time positions available. The summer 2026 internship program will begin on May 12th and will end on August 14th. Interns gain applicable knowledge to enhance classroom learning by working with current government professionals throughout Central Ohio and acquire insights into the services provided by a regional planning commission. Interns also can attend monthly commission meetings as well as special MORPC-sponsored events and are paired with a MORPC staff member to serve as their mentor during the summer internship program. Previous City & Regional Planning interns have gained experience using ArcGIS, ArcGIS StoryMaps, WordPress, Canva, Regrid, Streetmix, Diligent, Adobe Suite, Microsoft 365, and other software programs on the job. Specific past assignments include: * Creating a feedback workshop to address future development in commercial and residential areas involving land use * Completing a citywide property inventory of over 2,700 parcels, which required the creation of a property survey and grading system * Updating GIS maps and ordinance maps with current property zones * Conducting a housing study to determine if the facade quality in a downtown area warranted funding from a HUD grant program * Aiding in fieldwork duties, including setting out and retrieving pedestrian/traffic counters/cameras across key points in a region * Assisting in the development of Active Transportation Plans by designing document layout, creating graphs from Excel data, photographing existing conditions and key landmarks, etc. * Conducting research on Type A Childcare homes and summarizing findings for future use when updating zoning codes * Establishing zoning practices and monitoring enforcement * Writing minutes for trustee and zoning commission meetings, providing clerical support, and other duties as assigned Qualifications Students must meet the following requirements: * 30 hours of completed college coursework * Interest in public service careers * GPA 3.0 or higher (preferred) * Legally eligible to work in the United States * Reliable transportation to and from work * Attend a Central Ohio college OR attend other college and have access to local housing Benefits All MORPC internships are paid opportunities!
