PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The following duties are normal for this position. These are not to be construed as exclusive or all-inclusive. Other duties may be required and assigned. Patrol designated areas to prevent, deter, and suppress traffic violations and criminal activity. Enforce regulations and preserve public peace for Van Buren County residents. Investigate criminal and traffic offenses in accordance with the Michigan penal code and traffic statutes. Apprehend violators. Maintain contact with the Sheriff's Office, acknowledge receipt of dispatches, and respond to emergency situations. Provide accurate information for the preparation of statistical reports and for the prosecution of offenders. Transport prisoners or mentally incapacitated persons to or from correctional facilities or government institutions. Accompany inmates to court for arraignments, sentencing, and motions. Appear and/or testify in civil, criminal, and/or traffic litigation cases. QUALIFICATIONS / EXPERIENCE: Requires daily travel to locations that are not barrier free. Ability to lift/carry up to and in excess of 50 lbs. Ability to crawl in small spaces and walk, run, and crouch for extended periods of time. Required to receive preventative rabies shots or waive personal rights in the event of an animal attack. Ability to work outdoors and under somewhat adverse conditions, e.g., handling of vicious and hurt animals. High School Diploma or GED required. GRADUATE OF THE MICHIGAN LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICERS TRAINING ACADEMY. Previous experience as a law enforcement officer. Military experience preferred. OTHER REQUIREMENTS: Employment is dependent on background check, criminal history, physical, comprehension exam and drug screen. Applicant must complete County application form.
