Position Summary:
Supervises and maintains discipline and control of resident's at all times. Performs searches of resident's person and physical areas in order to prevent and control secretion or contraband. Observes and monitors resident's activities and interactions while enforcing policy, rules and regulations. Follows established security procedure in controlling visitors, staff, resident and vehicular traffic to prevent the admittance or exit of unauthorized persons and the introductions of contraband. Takes and reports periodic counts of residents. Responds to emergency situations on accordance with appropriate contingency plans. Subject to regular rotation of post and/or shift assignment within the facility. Corrections Officers are required to weapons qualify under KDOC guidelines during initial training and on an annual basis.
Corrections Officer I (A)s are evaluated on their ability to observe and recall inmate behavior, surroundings and events; write clear and complete sentences; respond to emergencies quickly, climb stairs and use physical force to subdue violent and resisting residents; remain alert over long periods of time; remain calm during stressful situations; and interact with residents and co-workers to establish and maintain effective working relationships. The incumbent must be capable of preforming Essential Physical Functions. An initial 12-month probationary period is required for new Corrections Officers.
Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following:
* Supervise, maintain discipline and control of residents at all times.
* Shake down physical areas of the facility and perform pat downs of residents to prevent and control the secreting of contraband.
* Applies mechanical restraints when necessary.

Education and/or Other Requirement:
Applicant must possess a valid Kansas Driver's License and have a satisfactory driving record. Applicant must be capable of receiving certification from the Kansas Law Enforcement Training Center for a full-time law enforcement officer in the State of Kansas. All applicants must be a U.S. citizen, 21 years or older, at the time of appointment and have the ability to pass a work-related physical proficiency/agility test, a medical/physical examination, a psychological examination and a background investigation. Applicants must not have been convicted of a felony, must not have been dishonorably discharged from any branch of the U.S. armed forces or a background that would be disrespectful to the profession of law enforcement or the citizens of Pottawatomie County Kansas. Employees must successfully complete a 6-month probationary training and assessment period from the date of employment.
Personal Relations:
Incumbent works daily with sworn and non-sworn employees and supervisory officers in order to fulfill job responsibilities and department objectives. Also, may interact on a daily basis with other county agencies, outside law enforcement agencies and the general public. Incumbent exchanges routine factual information daily through one-on-one contact, by telephone, radio and by correspondence. Daily contact with the general public, co-workers and supervisory personnel is expected.
