    Nuisance Abatement Officer Summary Title:Nuisance Abatement OfficerID:1019Location:Cape GirardeauDepartment:3070 - HEALTHSalary Range:$16.65 Description **POSITION TYPE:** Hourly, Non-exempt **JOB SUMMARY:** This position is responsible for enforcing city animal control ordinances, enforcement of parking ordinances and abandoned vehicles regulations, ordinances pertaining to nuisances, including weed, trash, and zoning violations as well as other health and safety issues. **MAJOR DUTIES:** * Patrols for violations pertaining to animals, weeds, litter, parking, abandoned vehicles and nuisances. * Investigates abandoned vehicles on public & private property: determines status of vehicles; attempts to contact owner; adheres tow notice to vehicle; tows the vehicle if not removed in 48 hours. * Assists with traffic control at motor vehicle crashes and special events. * Explains applicable parking and abandoned vehicle regulations and procedures to vehicle owners. * Posts property, locates owners, and gives written notice to violators of weed abatement and litter ordinances. * Testifies in court as required. * Performs humane euthanasia of animals. * Investigates complaints and reports of animal violations, animal bites, cruelty to animals, and weed and litter violations. * Impounds and controls domestic and wild, stray, injured, and unwanted animals, reptiles, and fowl. * Collects and disposes of dead animals. * Ensures safe transportation of all animals to shelter by properly maintaining vehicle and related equipment. * Completes required reports and documents; enters daily log sheet into the computer database; prepares statistical reports to show quantity of work performed. * Responds to calls pertaining to damages or inoperable vehicles on private property; issues citations as warranted. * Issues work orders to Public Works Department to mow properties not in compliance with the city's weed ordinances. * Performs other related duties as assigned. **KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED BY THE POSITION** * Knowledge of the methods, techniques, and equipment used in the safe handling of animals. * Knowledge of municipal traffic laws, parking ordinances, abandoned vehicle ordinances, nuisance and animal ordinances. * Knowledge of vehicle identification procedures * Knowledge of safe and humane methods of animal euthanasia. * Skill in the safe capture and transport of stray animals. * Skill in the operation of a computer and other modern office equipment. * Skill in oral and written communication. **MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:** * High school diploma or GED. * Valid driver's license. * No felony convictions.
