TITLE: Court Reporter
JOB OBJECTIVES: Incumbent is responsible for taking verbatim records of the court proceedings and producing transcripts when necessary and acting as a judicial assistant for the Judges as determined by the rotating court reporter schedule.
FULL/ PART TIME: Full Time
WORKING HOURS: Monday- Friday 8:00am -4:00pm
CLASSIFIACTION: Unclassified/ Non-Exempt
SALARY: $30.00-$33.00 depending on experience

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
* Responsible for taking verbatim Court proceedings at the rate of 225 words per minute;
* Responsible for preparing entries, correspondence, work-related letters, and opinions as dictated by Judge and properly filing them in the appropriate departments;
* Responsible for transcribing, editing, and proofreading transcripts and filing them with the Court of Appeals in a timely manner.
* Responsible for preparing media requests and media orders during Court proceedings
* Responsible for preparing jury instructions and jury verdict forms
* Responsible for marking all Exhibits during Court proceedings and for the care and custody of the Exhibits
* Responsible for filing all stenograph notes and or downloading any recorded Court proceedings
* Responsible for preparing Temporary Protection Orders and personally serving them on the Defendant and parties and or faxing it to the jail when necessary
* Responsible for having all court proceedings digitally recorded in his/her absence, including downloading and storing all recordings.
* Responsible for answering phones, helping callers, taking messages and checking voicemail
* Responsible for general bookkeeping for Court Reporter; including submitting transcript fee forms to the Auditor when necessary
* Responsible for notarizing transcripts, etc.;
* Trained and experienced in acting as Bailiff when necessary; including swearing in witnesses and using courtroom laptop and video arraignment equipment
* Trained and experienced in acting as Assignment Commissioner/Deputy Bailiff when necessary.

Performs other related job functions as needed.
I. JOB REQUIREMENTS AND DIFFICULTY OF WORK
Equipment: Incumbent uses the following equipment: computer, printer, typewriter, copier, facsimile, courtroom reordered, video arraignment equipment, courtroom laptop and computerized stenograph machine. Incumbent must purchase stenography machine and Computer-Aided Transcription software in order to qualify for duties.
Critical Skills/Expertise:
* Knowledge and ability to take verbatim Court proceedings at the rate of 225 words per minutes with 98% accuracy;
* Knowledge of computers and related software including Microsoft word
* Knowledge of stenograph theory;
* Knowledge of Computer-Aided Transcription software;
* Knowledge of RPR standards and procedures in typing transcripts;
* Knowledge and understanding of Judicial System;
* Knowledge and ability to type, using correct spelling and grammar;
* Knowledge of legal terminology and legal procedures, medical terminology and medical anatomy, and technical terminology;
* Knowledge of Business Law
* Must possess excellent organization and preparation skills;
* Knowledge and experience in jury charges, literary, Q & A testimony, and four-voice testimony;
* Knowledge and experience in Domestic Relations Court, Municipal Court, Common Pleas Court Depositions, City Council meetings, jury trials, and arbitrations;
* Knowledge and experience in transcribing, editing, and proofreading of transcripts.
Job Standards: Associates Degree in Applied Business and Court Conference Reporting is required, including a qualified educational background in medical terminology, medical anatomy, legal procedures, legal terminology, business law, and psychology. Must be a Notary Public.
II. DIFFICULTY OF WORK
Work involves following standardized procedures to complete assigned duties.
III. RESPONSIBILITY
Supervisor provides general guidance allowing for the planning of procedures and methods to attain objectives. Incumbent makes general decisions regarding work independently. Errors in work may cause inaccuracies in reports, records, transcripts or technical data resulting in inaccurate or incomplete information which could affect the outcome of a case and/or ruling and result in termination of employee.
IV. PERSONAL WORK RELATIONSHIPS
Incumbent has contact with co-workers, employees in the department, public and private sector employees, and the general public. The purpose of these contacts is to accurately record Court proceedings and to handle clerical duties and answer questions.
V. PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK ENVIRONMENT
Physical Requirements: Incumbent performs sedentary work which may require lifting up to fifteen (15) pounds occasionally.
Physical Activity: Incumbent performs the following physical activities: fingering, grasping, talking, hearing, and repetitive motions.
Visual Activity: Incumbent performs work where the seeing job is close to the eyes.
Job Location: Incumbent works inside with no exposure to adverse environmental conditions. Physical locations include both branches of the Portage County Municipal Court, located at 203 West Main Street, Ravenna, OH and 303 East Main Street, Kent, OH.
