Ogden Newspapers Company History Timeline

1935

G. Ogden Nutting was born in 1935, and it could be said that he arrived with newspaper publishing in his blood.

1968

In 1968 Nutting became the third generation of his family to direct and manage the company when he became general manager after twelve years working in all departments at several newspapers.

1973

The Jesuit president of the college was Frank Haig, brother of General Alexander Haig, who later served as White House Chief of Staff under Richard Nixon and then Gerald Ford in 1973-74.

1996

1996 August — Ogden Newspapers Inc., a family-owned company based in Wheeling, W.Va., launches Ogden Publications in Topeka, Kan., with Bryan Welch as its publisher and editorial director.

2000

2000 August — Launched Farm Collector with the August issue.

2002

2002 April — Launched Good Things to Eat as a quarterly publication featuring recipes from Grit and Capper's.

2005

2005 October — Acquired Natural Home from Interweave Press.

2006

In 2006 a resident of Wheeling wrote:

2007 February — Ogden's custom publishing and fulfillment division launched.

2009

2009 June — Capper's joins Grit as a bimonthly glossy magazine devoted to rural living.

2010

In April 2010, after another Ogden newspaper in Minnesota printed a piece which stated that ACORN (Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now) was “a front for liberal politicians,” a reader responded that “this ‘editorial’ is not an editorial at all.

Although centered on the city of Wheeling (population in 2010 equaled 28,486), it also serves West Virginia’s Northern Panhandle and five counties in Ohio.

2011

2011 June — Mother Earth News Fair extended to West Coast with event at Puyallup Fairgrounds in Washington state.

2012

In 2012 he received the Frank W. Mayborn Leadership Award from the Southern Newspaper Publishers Association in recognition of his vision, community leadership, and significant contributions to the newspaper industry.
