Ogden Services Corporation company history timeline

1981

Ralph Ablon believed that the economy would shift toward a service orientation, and in 1981 he set forth plans for a major reorganization of Ogden Corporation that would fully embrace the service economy.

In 1981 Ogden also purchased Hain Pure Food Company Inc., and Offshore Food Services Inc.

1982

Ogden made its initial investment in the service supply industry in 1982, with the $118 million acquisition of the Allied Maintenance Corporation, a company that Ralph E. Ablon, Ogden's long-time chairman, had sought to buy for years.

1983

In 1983, Ogden acquired the North American rights to the Martin GmbH system of incineration, the most widely used technology.

The company purchased the rights to the Martin System of incineration in 1983 and formed Ogden Martin Systems.

The Signal Companies - now part of Allied-Signal - had American rights to the system before its 1983 merger with Wheelabrator-Frye, when it picked up the Van Roll system, a relatively similar technology.

1984

To that end, he determined to spin off seven of the industrial companies, which had collectively turned a small profit of $1.3 million in 1984.

1985

Allied Maintenance and Ogden Services joined in 1985 to form Ogden Allied.

1986

In 1986, Ogden applied to the Rural Utilities Service (RUS) for a loan to completely renovate the system.

Ogden Projects completed its first waste-to-energy plant in 1986.

In 1986 Ogden began to market a new service to deal with hazardous waste.

1987

Ogden Telephone Company won the Rural Spectrum lottery in 1987 which enabled the Company to form partnerships with other rural companies and began to offer cellular service in the lower tier of Michigan.

1989

By 1989, Ogden enjoyed annual sales of more than $1 billion.

1990

Counter to all expectations, in 1990 the unit endured a loss of almost $4 million on revenues of $6 million.

Although the garbage-burning business makes no direct contribution to profits now, it could grow to 50 percent of Ogden's earnings by the 1990's, according to Michael Carstens, an analyst with Tucker Anthony. ''The income will go on for a long time,'' he said.

1991

In 1991, Ogden received contracts worth $160 million to manage buildings for IBM. Ogden Government Services is a major supplier of building management services for the United States government.

1992

R. Richard Ablon, president and chief executive officer, summarized the corporation's role in 1992: 'Our strategy is to build underlying value by creating a unique global services company.

1993

In 1993, it opened Arrowhead Pond--home to the NHL's Mighty Ducks.

1994

The company landed a contract to manage the observation deck at the World Trade Center in New York City in 1995 and also acquired a 50 percent interest in Metropolitan Entertainment Inc. and Firehole Entertainment Corporation.

1999

In 1999, Wet'n Wild Inc. and several other water parks were purchased.

1999: Ogden announces that it will sell its entertainment and aviation businesses.

2001

The company--known as Ogden Corporation until 2001--adopted is current moniker after selling off its entertainment and aviation assets to focus on its energy operations.

To mark its transformation into a pure play energy company, Ogden changed its name to Covanta Energy Corporation in 2001.

2002

The company's financial situation went from bad to worse when it defaulted on a $4.6 million interest payment in March 2002.

2002: Covanta files for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection.

2003

The company's financial situation went from bad to worse when it defaulted on a $4.6 million interest payment in March 2002. Its geothermal assets were sold in December 2003.

2004

The $30 million deal, which included Covanta's energy and water-related businesses, was completed in March 2004.

2013

The Utah Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum opened at the Union Station in June of 2013.

2022
