When Oglebay died in 1926, he left his beloved country estate to the people of Wheeling and vicinity for “so long as it shall be used for purposes of public recreation.” Under the terms of the will, the city was to accept or reject the bequest within three years.
These three words – City Accepts Waddington – formed the banner headline in the Wheeling Intelligencer on July 28, 1928.
Built from 1937-38 of natural sandstone, much of which was quarried locally, the facility stands as a tribute to the superior quality of Depression-era projects.
Oglebay, Norton had started to investigate the development of America's abundant sources of low-grade minerals with the 1939 creation of the Reserve Mining Co.
The Parks System Trust Fund was established in 1945 to raise money for capital growth.
In 1949, the company installed Ohio's first continuous coal mining machine.
Earl's nephew Crispin Oglebay, who held the presidency until 1949, has been credited with leading the company into a period of expansion.
The opening of the lodge in 1957 was a turning point for Oglebay, transforming the property into a year-round destination.
After commissioning a highly critical assessment of the corporate structure, Oglebay, Norton & Co.'s relatively small group of shareholders voted overwhelmingly to merge its ten affiliates into a single corporate entity in 1957.
The deficits forced the firm to cut its dividend for the first time since becoming a unified company in 1957.
In November 1975 Oglebay Norton's fleet lost its flagship in what has been called "the most famous shipwreck in Great Lakes history." During a terrible storm that year, the freighter Edmund Fitzgerald split in two and sunk in Lake Superior.
In honor of Burton’s involvement in more than 15 major building projects at Oglebay, the “hilltop area” was named the Burton Center in 1978 by the Wheeling Park Commission.
In 1986, LTV Steel Co.'s Chapter 11 bankruptcy erased $50 million in iron ore contracts from Oglebay Norton's books.
In 1987, Hong Kong's Industrial Equity (Pacific) Ltd. acquired a 24 percent stake in the company.
Having diffused the previous year's investors, Oglebay Norton executives faced a new challenge in 1988, this time from Brent D. Baird's First Carolina Investors Inc.
He won a place on Oglebay Norton's board in January 1990 after agreeing not to make a takeover attempt or increase his stake to more than 11 percent.
A 1990 strike at the Eveleth Mines only complicated the situation.
Carriage House Glass opened in 1992 and honors the West Virginia glass industry.
Beginning in 1992, the company shed its coal mining and foundry interests and halved its dividend to generate funds for four key businesses: marine transportation, iron ore, refractories and minerals, and industrial sands.
In 1996 The Oglebay Foundation was created to allow for more flexibility.
In 2000, another championship golf course, the Arnold Palmer Signature Course, opened next to the Jones course.
The ski area, located at the Par 3/Driving Range reopened in 2004 after a $1.2 million upgrade that included a triple chair lift, snow-making equipment, and rental skis and snowboards.
The new wing opened in May of 2006 and features deluxe king and double queen rooms and suites.
