Oklahoma Blood Institute company history timeline

1977

Since beginning operations on January 1, 1977, Oklahoma Blood Institute has been committed to four major goals:

The Enid donor center was established later in 1977.

1981

Milestones In 1981, the Blood Institute met its first goal of maintaining an adequate blood supply by becoming self-sufficient.

1996

Largely due to OBI’s research, the HIV antigen test was officially licensed by the FDA in March of 1996 and became a mandatory test for all blood centers.

1999

Four years later, Oklahomans faced another disaster with the F-5 tornado that devastated the state on May 3, 1999.

2001

The first blood bank to fly blood to New York city to assist in emergency response immediately following the September 11, 2001 attack.

2006

Doctor Gilcher retired as President, CEO and Medical Director in 2006.

2007

John Armitage, M.D., was named President and CEO in January of 2007, a position he has now held for more than ten years.
