Oklahoma City Zoo and Botanical Garden company history timeline

1904

The zoo originally opened in Oklahoma City in 1904 (before statehood) in Wheeler Park.

1909

The first animal acquired was a deer fawn and by 1909 the zoos’ collection consisted of 125 animals.

1933

In 1933 the WPA began construction of the Zoo Amphitheater, present home of many concerts today.

1935

By 1935 major expenditures were approved for the WPA for projects in the zoo.

In 1935 "Monkey Island" was built by the WPA, and the sunken ship was 80 feet long and came with a 17 foot mast for the primates to climb on.

1936

Initially the island featured 35 rhesus monkeys, and in 1936 5 ring-tailed lemurs were briefly added to the exhibit.

1998

In 1998 "Monkey Island" was demolished/dismantled by the zoo.

2009
