The New York Board of Charities incorporated Olean General Hospital on July 13, 1898.
Through fundraising efforts initiated by a group of local women, the St Margaret’s Chapter of St Stephen’s Episcopal Church, a building and property for the hospital were purchased in 1902 for $6,000.
Clara A. H. Smith in memory of her brother, Governor Frank W. Higgins in 1912, the first building at the current hospital site was made possible.
The citizens of Olean contributed to the construction of a maternity building in 1921.
The Olean Medical Group was founded in 1948 by three physicians: Doctor Goodlett, DoctorJohnson and Doctor Runals.
In 1948 they raised over $425,000 to connect patient wards to the hospital proper and to repair the existing maternity building.
Work on a new building, designed by architect Thomas K. Hendryx, became the world’s first hospital with an all-aluminum exterior and officially opened to patients on Saturday, May 12, 1951.

In 1952, the Robert J. Dermitt Memorial Pediatric Ward was built with funds given by Jeannette and Margaret Dermitt in memory of their brother.
The Bradford Hospital Nurse Training School was established, one of the first in the state, to provide valuable training for more than 600 nurses until its closing in 1956.
An entirely new $3 million facility was built in 1964.
In 1978, the Dermitt Memorial Pediatric Unit was expanded and renovated.
In January 1987, the Olean Medical Group opened a satellite office in Franklinville, New York, which is 20 miles north of Olean.
They further expanded and in 1989, a major addition and renovation project was completed.
A significant step forward in better meeting the growing needs of Olean and its surrounding communities took place in July 1991 with the merger of Olean General and St Francis Hospital.
In 1992, the construction of a new maternity unit and intensive care unit were made possible by a $15 million bequest in memory of Mabel Norton Adams.
In January 2000, the Group purchased a local physician's practice which includes satellite offices in Cuba and Ellicottville, New York.
Competed in September 2001, this $30 million project included construction of a new 100,000 square foot east wing and renovations to the hospital’s older west wing.
In April 2007, the hospital received a $10 million gift to fund the acquisition of advanced state of the art diagnostic imaging equipment, including a new 64 slice CT scanner for use in minimally invasive interventional and cardiovascular procedures.
In January, 2015, two practices joined forces with Olean Medical Group.
