1996

But soon after its creation in 1996, GM was experimenting with other ways to extend the OnStar brand, including lending the technological platform to Toyota and engaging in some of the earliest experiments in vehicle connectivity to the internet.

1998

In 1998 GM increased its stake in Suzuki to 10 percent and agreed to build cars with the Japanese automaker.

1999

Delphi, meanwhile, would be completely separated from GM through a May 1999 spinoff to shareholders.

2000

In May 2000 GM, Fuji, and Suzuki agreed to develop compact cars for the European market.

In June 2000 G. Richard Wagoner was promoted from president to CEO, with Smith remaining chairman.

In early 2000 Hughes would make a further divestment of a then noncore unit, selling its satellite manufacturing operations to the Boeing Company for about $3.75 billion.

2001

However, end of the 2001 September, the company started to have challenges, and the system was changed again.

2002

Negotiations began that year and were finalized in 2002.

2002: A majority interest in Daewoo Motor Company--later known as GM Daewoo Auto & Technology--is acquired.

2003

Overall, the company's net income for 2003 reached $3.8 billion.

2003: The company sells its stake in Hughes Electronics to News Corporation.

2007

After completing the transition to a digital platform in 2007, OnStar systems offered more efficient means of data processing and communication.

2008

In the following next few years, General Motors became a survivor in the highly competitive automobile industry with the economic recession in 2008, therefore the company had bailed out by the government for avoiding bankruptcy.

2009

The deal, of which presiding judge Robert Gerber says he was unaware – despite its disclosure in an SEC filing on the day GM sought Chapter 11 protection – could prompt a reopening of the 2009 case.”

In the first quarter of 2009, the auto giant posted a 6 billion dollars loss and said that it burned through 10.2 billion dollars of cash in the first three months of the year as revenue plummeted by 20 billion dollars.

2010

In 2010, GM returned to using its traditional ticker symbol on the New York Stock Exchange, and in 2010 is also traded on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

However, besides these hard circumstances, in the first half of 2010, the General Motors sold more vehicles in China than in the US.

2011

The company regained its position as the world’s largest automaker, by vehicle unit sales, in 2011.

2013

COO Terry Inch announced in 2013 that OnStar would pursue implementing 4G technology as part of its digital offering.
