Onwentsia Club company history timeline
Following the Lake Forest Golf Club's 1895 season, increased enthusiasm led Lake Forest golfers to look west, beyond Leander McCormick’s property, so a proper 18-hole course could be built.
The present Onwentsia Club takes it's origins from a small seven hole course in Lake Park, followed by the creation of the Lake Forest Golf Club in 1894. It was at this point that the Club members decided to adopt the name "Onwentsia", from a native american term meaning "meeting place", and by 1896 the Onwentsia Club was moved to its present location.
The 1899 US Golf Association Amateur Golf Championship took place on the course, a major vote of confidence for Taylor's still-new establishment.
He was fond of an impressive roof, which he called “the hat,” and Onwentsia’s tall, segmented hipped roof falls in this line.For increased weekend lodging capacity, in 1899 two cottages with four apartments each were added to the grounds for members up from Chicago or for out-of-town guests.
Rather than taking a stroke, Gardner played his shot right from the roof, making the green and going on to save par. It began in 1906 and has been held ever since, with a few breaks and modifications for war and Prohibition.
Harrie Lindeberg's 1927 design for Onwentsia's clubhouse is still in use today.
These were torn down when the new clubhouse was built in 1927, but the new Deerpath Inn, built the next year just a few blocks away, stepped in to fulfill a similar role.
Lindeberg's reliance on a French revival style is reflected in many of his early architectural works, most notably in the Lake Forest estate of Dexter Cummings, built in 1931.
