The circulating nurse will assist with pain management, ophthalmology, orthopedic surgery, general and vascular surgery, podiatric surgery and plastic surgery. REQUIREMENTS RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES: OPERATING ROOM PROCEDURES: The circulating nurse is responsible for ensuring the operating room is clean, sterile and set up properly. The circulating nurse is responsible for checking all equipment and making sure everything is working properly prior to surgery. The incumbent is required to ensure the cautery machine, suction machine, light, or table are all working properly The circulating nurse is responsible for assisting the scrub nurse by setting up the theater. Assisting the scrub nurse also requires placing a sheet and pillow on the operating table and providing a clean kick bucket or pail. ANESTHESIA: The circulating nurse is responsible for positioning the patient for the procedure. The position depends on the procedure being performed. After the anesthesia is given the circulating nurse must reposition the patient and place their arms in restraints or and boards to keep them from hurting themselves. The circulating nurse exposes the patient's skin and if necessary, catheterizes the patient. DURING THE PROCEDURE: It is the responsibility of the circulating nurse to stay in the operating room during the procedure and make sure the operating room door stays close to secure the privacy of the patient. The circulating nurse will provide the surgical team any surgical supplies or instruments needed. The nurse will also replenish sponges and reposition the kick bucket if necessary. The circulating nurse will also make sure the patient remains covered and no nudity will be shown unless necessary for the procedure. END OF PROCEDURE: Assists with final count of sponges and instruments. Signs the theater register and ensures specimen is properly labeled and signed. Returns equipment to starting positions and makes sure equipment clean by using autoclaving and ready for the next procedure. Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: Current California RN license. BLS required. American Heart Association BLS preferred. ACLS required. American Heart Association ACLS preferred. CNOR certification is preferred. Minimum of 1 year of operating room experience. SKILLS & ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS: Basic knowledge of aseptic technique. Basic knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology. Ability to assess developmental needs of patients from infancy to the elderly and to modify care appropriately. Must be able to interpret pertinent findings and adapt to the OR setting. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Body Positions: Sitting and standing for prolonged periods. Body Movements: Arm and hand dexterity. Body Senses: Must have command of close and distant sight, color perception and hearing. Strength: Ability to lift and move up to 25-pounds. Working Environment: Work in an office, where the climate is controlled. OSHA exposure category: I Category I - Position includes tasks that involve exposure to Blood borne Pathogens. Category II - Position includes tasks that do not have exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens, however employment may require unplanned Category I tasks.
