POSITION SUMMARY
Passes instruments to the operating team during operations, applying aseptic techniques. Arranges and inventories sterile set-up for operation. Performs other duties as assigned. Requires certification and previous experience or training in surgical procedures.
Principal Duties:
1. Assist RN with patient admission to OR in a timely manner.

5. Makes every effort to answer telephone calls within three rings, introducing him/herself, department and title (if appropriate). Asks permission before placing the caller on hold or using the speakerphone. If caller is transferred, gives the caller the extension number of the person he or she is being transferred to. Offers further assistance to the caller upon completing the conversation.
6. Maintains an appropriate voicemail message and when away from the office has an out-of-office email message that is brief, current, and includes name and department and offers the caller options if possible.
7. Returns email and voicemail messages promptly but no later than within one business day (24 hours).
8. Always mindful of voice and language in public.

1. Reports to work appropriately groomed and in compliance with the Hospital's dress code. Wears identification badge at all times at chest level and facing outwards so identification is clearly visible.

JOB SUMMARY
The Surgical Technologist works under the supervision of a surgeon and registered nurse to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operatingroom environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. Surgical technologists possess expertise in the theory and application of sterile and aseptic technique and combine the knowledge of human anatomy, surgical procedures, and implementation tools and technologies to facilitate a physician's performance of invasive therapeutic and diagnostic procedures.
Communication: Collaborates with the leadership team [TC*1] [CTM*2] [CTM*3] to identify and resolve unit issues.
Keeps co-workers and intra-op staff informed of any updates/issues.
Follows written instructions as needed.
Quality: Complies with established departmental and organization policies/guidelines.
Maintains, operates, and monitors all equipment according to manufacturer's recommendations and department standards.
Technical Competency: Demonstrates the knowledge and skills necessary to provide services appropriate to the age of the patients served.
Collects, organizes, and enters information into the patient scheduling application.
Assists with various types of surgical operations providing technically skilled duties, serving as first assist.
Demonstrates knowledge of instrumentation and sterile/aseptic technique.
The incumbent may be asked to perform additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
Education: High School Diploma or GED required. Graduate of an accredited school of Surgical Technology program.
Experience: Previous Surgical Technologist experience preferred.

Licensure:
Must be registered with the Virginia Board of Medicine as a Surgical Technologist in accordance with Virginia Code §54.1-2956.12.
[TC*4] [CTM*5] Must hold and maintain a national surgical technologist certification (e.g., NBSTSA CST) or meet another Virginia Board-approved pathway (military training, DOL-registered apprenticeship, or applicable grandfathering criteria).
Must provide proof of compliance prior to hire and maintain active registration throughout employment.
Additional Skills/Requirements Required: Ability to create and maintain a sterile field. Knowledge of specialized instrumentation and equipment for various surgical procedures. Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure materials. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in writing, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Basic understanding of medical terminology. Computer skills.
