The Surgical Technologist II provides safe and effective care for the patients in surgery and commonly participates in procedures for patients from newborn to adult with conditions requiring surgical intervention. The Surgical Tech II serves as a resource for other staff, assists with unit problem-solving, and participates in evidence-based practice.

**Description**
1. Competently prepares the operating room ensuring the availability of appropriate instrumentation, supplies, and equipment for assigned cases in all services. Seeks to improve the process of room preparation and flow.
2. Performs surgical counts with RN prior to the procedure.
3. Consistently ensures that the majority of the sterile field has been set-up prior to the transfer of the patient into the operating room.
4. Consistently anticipates the instrumentation needs for the upcoming and to-follow cases aiding in case turnover time.
5. Uses knowledge of sterile techniques to competently gown and glove surgeons, assistants and self, passing instruments, and draping sterile field and maintaining sterile field throughout the procedure. Seeks to improve sharps safety measures.
6. Maintains sponges, blades, needles, and instruments in an orderly fashion and actively counts at appropriate times and responds promptly to request by the RN or surgeon to count.
7. Communicates with team in regard to changes in surgeon's preferences and to the RN on implants, medications, and surgical specimens.
8. At the close of the procedure, assists the RN with final surgical counts and breaking down of the sterile field ensuring the appropriate disposal of sharps.
9. Cleans, prepares, and transports instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists with instrument reprocessing tasks and inspects instruments for damage or repair needs reportling promptly to the Service Leader and/or the SPD Supervisor.
10. Assists other team members with cleaning and room turnover consistently ensuring the operating room is ready for the following case. Ensures unused supplies and equipment have been returned to storage areas and room supplies restocked.
11. Communicates with operating room when instruments are needed ofr the following cases.
12. Promotes safety and promptly reports any safety concerns to the RN or Team Leader.
13. Actively participates in improvement of patient care and the work environment through varying improvement activities.
14. Performs other duties as assigned.

Position Overview:
As an Operating Room Surgical Technologist at OrthoArkansas, you will play a critical role in ensuring safe and efficient surgical procedures by applying sterile techniques and performing scrub tech duties before, during, and after surgeries. Your expertise in equipment usage and sterile procedures will contribute to the success of each surgery and the safety of our patients.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Surgical Preparation and Sterile Technique:
Set up sterile fields according to the center's established policies.
Open, pass, and receive items in the sterile field correctly, adhering to AORN standards and OrthoArkansas Surgery Center policies.
Scrub, gown, and glove for surgeries, demonstrating comprehensive knowledge of sterile techniques.
Recognize and call attention to any breaks in sterile technique.
2. Surgical Assistance and Room Turnover:
Assist the RN Circulator in turning over operating rooms between cases, ensuring efficiency.
Wear proper attire and take necessary precautions when exposed to patients' body fluids.
3. Equipment and Supply Management:
Operate sterilization equipment safely, complying with Federal and State regulations.
Handle and clean instrument trays, demonstrating proper care and usage.
Restock ORs and identify supplies that need to be reordered to maintain a well-equipped surgical environment.
Interact with surgeons regarding the pricing of new instruments and patient care items.
4. Safety and Compliance:
Follow guidelines for the disposal of sharps and other hazardous materials in compliance with OSHA and State regulations.
Utilize the MSDS manual and Hazardous Communication Plan to ensure a safe work environment.
Provide coverage in Sterile Processing, as assigned, and assist in gathering data for Performance Improvement (PI) studies.
5. Record Keeping and Collaboration:
Enter statistical data into the computer for maintaining the Surgical Log.
Receive packages and manage deliveries at the back door.
Communicate and collaborate effectively with surgeons, physicians, and staff to ensure patient safety.
6. Additional Duties:
Perform any other related duties as required or assigned to support the overall function of the surgical team.

At times the work requires movement over various types of terrain, (hilly, steep, rocky, rough, and/or wet/slippery surfaces). The incumbent at all times must be able to carry or help carry someone from the site of the injury to the mode of transportation (vehicle/helicopter) and attend the injured party to the hospital. In order to perform a physical assessment of the injured party, the incumbent must see, hear, and communicate with the injured party.
Incumbents will be issued and must wear Company issued uniforms while on duty; additionally, incumbents will be responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of uniforms, as well as all issued equipment.
Incumbents are required to carry a Company issued pager/radio at all times in order to receive immediate notification of an assignment.

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:
Provides Basic Life Support including medical evaluation, treatment and stabilization of the critically ill and injured; responds to emergency rescue situations involving potential loss of life or bodily injury; maintains control, manages and directs patient care at the scene of a pre-hospital emergency; provides training and instruction to lesser trained personnel; performs other duties as required.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB:
• Recognizes and understands a medical emergency and makes reasonable and acceptable differential diagnosis;
• Performs physical examinations;
• Understands and anticipates potentially life-threatening presentation of non-cardiac emergencies and institutes appropriate emergency therapy where essential for the preservation of life;
• Deals with medical and emotional needs of any victim of acute illness or injury with the goal of reducing morbidity and mortality.
• Responsible for quality patient-care as established by the Company;
• Files standardized reports of patient information and care for the use of receiving hospital and administration, including nature of request for aid, pertinent past history, therapy provided diagnosis, disposition and sufficient patient information for billing purposes;
• Maintains effective communication with physician on duty at hospital to relate patient condition and obtain orders for treatment;
• Follows standard written protocols when a physician cannot be contacted;
• Transports the ill and injured to institutions of medical care;
• Operates emergency vehicles in a safe manner under all conditions;
• Cleans and maintains equipment;
• Properly completes patient statistics and medical information forms for administrative use;
• Assists technical rescues in removing victims from varied terrain and circumstances; and,
• Follows standard operating policies and procedures as developed and directed by the Company.
ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:
• Cleans and maintains (minor maintenance) vehicles;
• Cleans and maintains living quarters;
• Maintains records of vehicles, supplies, training and daily work; and,

GENERAL INFORMATION:
The supervisor makes assignments in terms of shifts to be worked and the general scope of the work assignment. The incumbent performs the work in accordance with the procedures, policies and medical orders provided. The incumbent must exercise judgment in applying the proper guideline to the proper situation. The work is spot checked and evaluated on the basis of feedback from the patient, medical staff and others.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
• Must possess and maintain:
• EMT / EMT-B
• CPR for the Health Care Provider
• Good knowledge of the street systems, addresses and physical layout of the area, and of the rescue equipment and the emergency medical equipment used in Advanced Life Support.
• Good ability to:
• Perform technical medical skills with a high degree of accuracy;
• Understand and effectively deal with emotional and medical needs of victims of injuries, acute illnesses, or psychological emergencies;
• Maintain a professional and objective approach to the care of ill or injured persons;
• Learn new concepts in rescue and medical skills and techniques and in pre-hospital care;
• Perform a variety of limited mechanical work involved in the use, testing and maintenance of rescue and medical equipment;
• Direct the work of, and teach other personnel;
• Understand and follow oral and written instructions and orders;
• Maintain a professional attitude when representing the Company;
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees, assisting agencies, hospital personnel, and the general public;
• Drive and operate emergency ambulance units; and,
• Author reports with narrative and numeric information.
• Additionally, incumbents must maintain a high degree of academic and practical knowledge in emergency medicine, and must attend sufficient continuing education classes, courses, and seminars both on and
off
duty to maintain annual certification, as required by the state in which you will be working.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
The work requires the incumbent to operate emergency medical vehicles, move medical equipment and extract injured persons from a wide variety of situations. Situation can involve vehicular, industrial and residential accidents, injuries or illness and occur anywhere in our coverage area. At times the work requires movement over various types of terrain, (hilly, steep, rocky, rough, and/or wet/slippery surfaces). The incumbent at all times must be able to carry or help carry someone from the site of the injury to the mode of transportation (vehicle/helicopter) and attend the injured party to the hospital. In order to perform a physical assessment of the injured party, the incumbent must see, hear, and communicate with the injured party.
Incumbents will be issued and must wear Company issued uniforms while on duty; additionally, incumbents will be responsible for the maintenance and cleaning of uniform s, as well as all issued equipment.
Incumbents are required to carry a Company issued pager/radio at all times in order to receive immediate notification of an assignment.
