This position requires the ability to attend a week long orientation (Monday through Friday) which is offered every two weeks. An employee in this class performs advanced lifesaving techniques assigned to the AEMT by the NC Office of Emergency Medical Services. Paramedics drive an ambulance to the scene of an emergency and apply necessary first-aid to sick or injured persons, and transport persons to a medical facility. Performs advanced lifesaving techniques assigned to the EMT-Paramedics by the N.C. Office of Emergency Medical Services. Tact, courtesy, and firmness are required in dealing with sick or injured persons and with the general public. Work is performed in accordance with established emergency medical procedures and techniques, but the employee must exercise considerable independent judgment in diagnosing a victim's condition and applying short-term relief. Work is performed under general supervision and is evaluated by the employee's ability to respond effectively to emergency situations. Working knowledge of city and county geography and location of roads and streets, hospitals and nursing homes. Working knowledge of radio communications equipment. Minimum Education and Experience Graduation from high school or GED and one year of EMT experience or an associate's degree in emergency medical care. Certification by the NC Department of Human Resources Office of EMS and the NC Board of Medical Examiners as an EMT-Paramedic required. Must have a valid NC driver's license. A higher education level may be considered as a substitution for all or part of the experience requirement. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Responds to emergency calls as an ambulance driver or attendant. Performs necessary rescue work, administers necessary emergency medical care, and transports persons to appropriate medical facilities. Starts and maintains intravenous infusion; administers various solutions, drugs, intravenous injections. Performs gastric suction and pulmonary ventilation and related skills and techniques. Maintains ambulance, equipment, and supplies in proper working order. Performs related work as necessary. Acts as Preceptor for new employees and students. Gives talks on emergency medical services at schools. Conducts tours of station as requested. Cleans ambulances and stations. Studies street and road patterns of the County. Participates in a continuous training program in technical medical work and in ambulance service and operation. Maintaining a specific license such as a driver's license in good standing, without a lapse or loss of a privilege to drive in compliance with North Carolina law, and in compliance with applicable DOT standards for commercial motor vehicle drivers if required to perform the duties assigned to the position.
