Job DescriptionDescription: The Surgery Center Operating Room (OR) Technician is responsible for providing essential support in the operating room by assisting with various tasks that ensure the room is prepared for surgery, maintaining cleanliness, and supporting the surgical team during procedures. The OR Technician's primary role is to help maintain a sterile and safe environment, manage equipment and supplies, and provide logistical support before, during, and after surgeries. FLSA STATUS: Non-Exempt SUPERVISION RECEIVED: OR Manager Hours: Monday - Friday 8:30 AM - 5:00 PM ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: 1. Preoperative Preparation: o Prepare the OR: Assist in setting up the operating room by ensuring that it is clean, organized, and stocked with necessary equipment, instruments, and supplies for upcoming surgeries. o Maintain Sterility: Help ensure that the OR is properly sterilized before the procedure, following infection control protocols to reduce the risk of contamination. o Assist with Equipment Setup: Aid in preparing surgical equipment, including checking for proper function and ensuring instruments are sterile and available for the surgical team. o Transport Patients: Assist with moving patients to and from the operating room, ensuring their safety and comfort as they are positioned for surgery 2. Intraoperative Support: o Assist Surgical Team: Provide logistical support during surgeries, including fetching necessary supplies, ensuring the room is organized, and providing equipment as requested by the surgical team. o Patient Positioning: Assist with positioning the patient on the operating table to ensure optimal surgical access, stability, and safety during the procedure. 3. Postoperative Duties: o Clean and Disinfect the OR: After surgery, assist with cleaning and disinfecting the operating room. Ensure all equipment is cleaned and properly stored for future use. o Disposal of Waste: Safely dispose of surgical waste, ensuring that all biohazardous materials are handled according to safety and regulatory guidelines. o Restock Supplies: Replenish operating room supplies and ensure that the area is stocked and ready for the next procedure. o Assist with Patient Transport: Help transport patients to the recovery room or other designated areas post-surgery, ensuring they are safely transferred. 4. Inventory and Equipment Management: o Track Supplies: Assist in monitoring the availability of surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and other supplies, reporting any shortages to the OR supervisor or materials manager. o Maintain Equipment: Ensure that equipment is stored properly and is in good working order. Notify appropriate staff if equipment requires maintenance or repair. 5. General Support: o Collaboration: Work closely with surgical teams, nurses, anesthesiologists, and other OR staff to ensure smooth workflow and patient care o Communication: Communicate effectively with surgical staff to assist in managing the OR's needs before, during, and after surgery. o Compliance: Follow all safety and infection control protocols, ensuring the operating room is maintained in compliance with health regulations. The Surgical Technician performs scrub activities based on principles of aseptic technique, infection control, universal precautions guidelines, environmental control, and life safety guidelines. This position anticipates needs of patient and surgeon, demonstrates critical thinking skills, and prioritize activities when performing the scrub role. The Surgical Scrub Technician works under supervision of the RN, demonstrates ability to prepare medications for procedures to be used by physicians, and knows of routine drugs used intra-operatively, dosages, and/or concentration and appropriate route of administration. Essential Job Functions: * Prepares and knows the specific uses of equipment, instrumentation and supplies used for surgical procedures. * Locates, handles, and operates equipment properly. * Initiates service request and reports to supervisor action taken when malfunction of equipment occurs. * Performs scrub role, without assistance by locating supplies, equipment, and instruments; prepares operating room utilizing preference cards to set up surgical instruments and equipment; independently prepares the sterile field for adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients for the intra-operative experience; differentiates and demonstrates knowledge of sterilization methods required for instruments or equipment. * Implements and maintains preference cards in an updated complete form utilizing automated process and clinical information systems appropriately and efficiently. * Identifies potential risks to patients: identifies risks to patients to reduce incidence of injury; identifies actions to eliminate, minimize or report risks; identifies procedures to follow in the event of an incident; reports processes for common problems, failures and user errors. * Adheres to all Hospital Policies and Procedures, specifically Guidelines for Appropriate Conduct, Corporate Compliance, Diversity, and Confidentiality. * Applies the principles and values of customer service and continuous quality improvement while performing day-to-day activities of the position. * Maintains and protects confidentiality regarding all aspects of patient care, personnel and strategic issues. * Maintains positive working relationships and fosters cooperative work environment. Responsibilities * Surgical Case Preparation * Ensure proper equipment, instruments and supplies are provided for procedures and specialty areas. * Ensure a well organized sterile setup/field is maintained at all times contributing to smooth operations. * Anticipate and respond timely with efficiency when performing assignments. * Follow proper sterile techniques and maintain a sterile field at all times. * Provide assistance to the circulating RN with procedure/patient preparation. * Working knowledge of autoclaves in order to consistently follow the proper sterilization method for selected instruments. * Follow the proper procedure for counting of instruments, sponges and sharps. * Instrumentation is checked for accuracy prior to procedure for proper functionality and maintained throughout procedure. * Quality & Patient Safety * Appropriate procedure supplies and equipment for age specific needs is provided within specified guidelines. * Patients are transported safely and timely. * Assist in the positioning of patients as needed. * Ensure recommended AORN guidelines are followed at all times. * Collaboration & Teamwork * Follow case progress in order to anticipate surgeons needs. * Active participation in departmental improvement activities and staff meetings. * Provide assistance to the OR staff with room turnovers to help decrease turnover time. * Overhead pages are expected to be responded to as soon as possible or less than three (3) minutes. * Assist with after hours clerical OR desk duties by answering phones and taking messages. * Able to take call for assigned department within four (4) months of hire, if required by facility. * Other Duties as Assigned * Other duties as assigned are completed.
