Responsibilities
Facilitate the safe and efficient performance of surgical procedures.
* Prepare surgical operating suite with sterile and non-sterile instruments and supplies.
* Hand required and requested instruments and supplies to surgeon during surgery.
* Assist with preparing, transporting, positioning and draping patients.
* Maintain instruments in an organized manner and monitor and track instruments counts throughout procedures.

What you will do
Checks supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Anticipates problem areas and adjusts instrumentation to individual patient. Sets up sterile table with instruments, supplies, and equipment prior to patient entry. Cleans and prepares instruments for transport to decontamination
Assists team members to place and position patient on O.R. table. Performs surgical scrubs, gowning, and gloving appropriately. Helps in draping the sterile field.
Maintains highest standard of sterile technique and promptly reports any compromise. Performs surgical scrubs, gowning, and gloving appropriately.
Mixes and labels all medications under the supervision of the RN Circulator. Performs appropriate counts with the RN Circulator prior to the operation and before the incision is closed.
Hands instruments and supplies to surgeon, holds retractors, cuts sutures, and performs tasks as directed by surgeon during the operation. Wound closure is specific to Certified First Assistant (CFA) duties and is referenced to the Certified First Assistant (CFA) job description.
Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room Assists in prepping room for the next patient.
Attends to proper care and handling of specimens while they are on the sterile field.
Places sterile dressings on patient following surgery.

Administering basic/Advanced life support to patients at the scene, in a prehospital/pre-transport setting in accordance with federal, state, and local laws, regulations and standards;

What you can expect:
* Direct Patient Care. Spend the majority of your day in direct one-on-one patient care to provide safe, comfortable and hygienic dialysis treatment.

* Technician Duties. To monitor patients before, during and after dialysis treatment including measuring and recording stats, patient observations, and hemodialysis machine setup. Please note you will have exposure to blood and needles.
* Building long-term relationships with your patients who are suffering from end stage renal disease and are receiving treatment on average 3 times/week. You will also be responsible for educating patients on Kidney Dialysis related topics.
* Team. Cross functional team of clinicians including technicians, nurses, dietitians, social workers and leadership. PCTs work under the supervision of a RN.

**PRINCIPAL** **DUTIES** **AND** **RESPONSIBILITIES:**
**Patient Related**
Education:
+ Assist other health care members in providing patient specific detailed education regarding adequacy measures where appropriate - Online Clearance Monitoring (OLC), Adequacy Monitoring Program (AMP), Urea Kinetic Modeling (UKM), and regarding disease process/access.
Treatment:
+ Welcome assigned patients and inquire as to their wellbeing since their last treatment.
+ Evaluate vascular access for patency, perform vascular access cannulation, and perform administration of heparin as delegated or as allowed by state law.
+ Obtain necessary pre and post treatment vital signs and weight and perform vascular access evaluation pre- treatment
+ Initiate dialysis treatment according to prescribed orders including blood flow (QB) and dialysate flow (QD).

+ Record accurate and timely information regarding vital signs and treatment parameters onto the Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet with initial identification
+ Responsible for accurate documentation of information related to patient treatment including completion of Hemodialysis Treatment Sheet and, if applicable, progress notes.
+ Report any significant information and/or change in patient condition directly to the registered nurse or supervisor.

+ Assists in training of applicable direct patient care staff on appropriate programs under the supervision of a nurse.

+ Sets and preforms a treatment on all machines used in the transitional care unit.
+ Assist in assuring patient understanding of treatment options including demonstration of the peritoneal dialysis set-up.
+ Assists with coordination of transition to patient's modality choice.

Work under the supervision of a licensed vocational nurse or a registered professional nurse to perform the following duties:
* After authorization by the facility's licensed nurse or the resident's treating physician, administers PRN medications.

Responsibilities
* The Patient Care Technician collaborates with licensed nurses to support the safe and compassionate delivery of patient care in a healing environment.
* Under the supervision of a licensed nurse, the PCT performs delegated tasks and demonstrates advanced skills in providing care to age-specific patient populations.
* Responsibilities include recording data in accordance with policy, reporting patient observations and concerns, and assisting with both clinical and non-clinical duties.
* Key tasks involve obtaining vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living (ADLs) such as bathing, dressing, and feeding, collecting lab specimens, and supporting patient monitoring.
* In addition to proficiency in general areas of practice, the PCT completes advanced unit-based competencies and skill validations, enabling them to perform their job functions as assigned.

A surgical technician is an aide or LPN who has been specifically trained for the surgical area in the hospital. He/she works directly under the supervision of the OR supervisor, RN, or physician.
Qualifications
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: He/she must be accurate and rapid in preparations. He/she must be acutely aware and observant of sterile technique and location and purpose of all equipment located in the surgical area. The surgical technician must be aware of and have knowledge in cleaning of surgery and all supplies. He/she must know and use proper sterilizing techniques
REQUIRIED SKILLS/ABILITIES:
The surgical technician will scrub in on surgeries.

The surgical technician may be called in to the hospital when off duty for surgical and sterilizing needs.
The surgery technician works indoors in well-lighted and ventilated rooms. He/she could be exposed to communicable diseases, cuts or minor burns from instruments and equipment.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Minimum - High School Diploma and C N A or LPN certification. Surgery Tech certification is preferred, but not required. On-the-job training will be provided.

Stormont Vail Surgical Technology Apprenticeship Program
Surgical Technologists work alongside surgeons, nurses, and other members of the health care team during surgical operations. At Stormont Vail Health, Surgical Technologists work in operating rooms in the hospital and outpatient surgical centers. They typically work full-time, which may include nights, weekends, holidays, and on-call work. They are responsible for preparing for, assisting with, and cleaning up after surgical operations. An important part of their role is maintaining a sterile and functional surgical environment. A Surgical Technologist needs to be able to stand for long periods of time, remain alert and observant, work well under pressure, communicate clearly, and pay attention to detail.
Stormont Vail Apprenticeship Details:
This apprenticeship provides paid training and employment from Day 1. This year-long program includes classroom training, laboratory and simulation, as well as hands-on clinical experiences, as well as structured mentorship from experienced Surgical Technologists.
Eligibility Requirements:
High school diploma
Willingness to sign a work commitment for 18 months after program completion

A Brief Overview
The Surgical Technologist Resident is a learning, mentored member of the surgical team that works in collaboration with Educators and OR staff to obtain the knowledge base and skill set required to assist in surgical procedures, to facilitate the function of the operating room and the flow of surgical cases. The Surgical Technologist Resident functions within their level of expertise under the immediate direction of an Educator, Surgical Technologist, and/or Registered Nurse. Through a focused curriculum of didactic coursework, lab simulation, and clinical training, the Resident will work toward the goal of an understanding of the fundamental steps of the procedure being performed, the resources necessary to perform the procedure, and anticipates the needs of the surgeon. The Resident will obtain the knowledge and ability to maintain the sterile field during the procedure and participates in ensuring safe, high quality patient care.
