All EMT Intermediate Duties and Responsibilities:
Implements MD orders under supervision of an RN as allowed under this purpose description. The following list of skills and procedures is included:
1. Splint application
2. Wound irrigation and preparation for suturing
3. 12 lead EKGs
4. Foley catheter insertion
5. Venipuncture for the purpose of obtaining blood samples
6. Vascular access; inserting a peripheral intravascular catheter or intraosseous device
7. Administration of 0.9% NaCl flush as needed
8. Initiate and administer IV fluids as ordered under the direction on an RN or Provider
9. Point of care (POC) testing including glucose, urine dip, strep, and pregnancy testing, i-Stat testing of venous and arterial blood samples and blood alcohol testing via breathalyzer analysis
10. Performs daily duties of POC quality control checks, stocking, and temperature checks as outlined on the Tech Daily Assignment sheet
11. Upon initiation by an RN or Provider, application of restraint or seclusion in an emergency situation in order to ensure the immediate physical safety of patients, staff or visitors when other less restrictive interventions have been deemed ineffective
12. Act as an observer for a restrained/secluded patient or AT Risk patient requiring observation
13. Performance of CPR as indicated and/or directed, including BVM ventilation and chest compressions
Defibrillation as directed by the ED code team using an AED
Responds as member of ED code team to patients requiring resuscitation in other departments on the first floor of the hospital for the purposes of performing CPR and establishing IV access
Performs as a member of the trauma resuscitation team
Spinal immobilization and vehicle extraction for patients self-presenting to the ED with suspected spinal injury
Set up suture trays and central line trays according to sterile procedure
Set up of rapid infuser, chest drainage systems, and suction equipment
Provides patient education and training in use of immobilization devices as well as ambulation assistive devices
Performs intake assessment based on current ED Intake Criteria on patients presenting through ED lobby. Identifies need to call Charge RN or Provider for emergent patients. Other intake duties include:
1. Performance of 12 lead EKGs within 10 minutes of arrival for patients presenting with chest pain
2. POC testing as indicated
3. Repeat vital signs per policy on patients waiting in the ED lobby
4. Performs suture removals
Receives and documents EMS patient reports from the field, advises the Charge RN and/or Provider of patient condition, and whether the patient meets trauma, stroke, STEMI, or sepsis alert criteria
Acts as a patient and family advocate recognizing changes in patient condition and reports this information to an RN or Provider as indicated
Performs Legal Blood Alcohol blood draws at the request of Law Enforcement personnel
Documents all procedures and patient care interventions performed in the patient care record
Acts in capacity as department unit secretary
Facilitating transportation of stable patients with diagnostic procedures, admissions, and discharges
Assists with the transportation of patients to and from the helipad
Assists with lifting and transfer of patients
When acting as Lead Tech, ensures that all daily tech duties are assigned and completed
Reports to the charge nurse or ED Clinical Coordinators any broken or malfunctioning equipment
Utilizes universal precautions and infection control procedures according to hospital policy
Cleans patient rooms and patient monitoring equipment between patient care episodes
Acts as a member of the procedural sedation team
Removal of NG tubes under supervision or direction of an RN or Provider
Administration and evaluation of the following medications under ED RN of provider Direction:
1. Oral Glucose preparations
2. Aspirin PO for adults with suspected cardiac chest pain
3. Acetaminophen or Ibuprofen PO for pediatric or adult patients with fever
4. Albuterol, Ipratropium, or Xopenex via nebulized inhaled administration
5. Activated Charcoal PO
6. Naloxone bysubcut, IM, or intranasal administration
7. Epinephrine 1:1,000 SQ or IM no single dose greater than 0.3 ml for anaphylaxis and known asthmatics in severe respiratory distress
8. Epinephrine 1:10,000 IV for cardiac arrest based on current dosage for adult and pediatric patients
9. Anti-emetic medications, PO, IM or IV
10. Diphenhydramine PO or IV for allergic reactions or dystonic reactions
11. Corticosteroids PO, IM, or IV
12. Lidocaine 2% preservative and epinephrine free for intraosseous device use on adult patients for pain control

This position is located in the Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Transport division of the Oklahoma City Fire Department and will be responsible for field patient care and at times, operation of a patient transport ambulance. The Emergency Medical Technician (Paramedic) will maintain high levels of patient care and clinical performance. Medical and clinical performance will be in accordance with documented protocols, practices, and Medical Control Board directives; in the best interest of the patient; and confined to the scope of practice commensurate with Paramedic level licensure. Essential job functions include: performing field patient care for metro area residents; providing basic and advanced medical care procedures; conducting self in an ethical, professional manner; implementing directives issued by Field Operations Supervisor (FOS) and/or EMS management; following medical care practices as documented in medical protocols and as mandated by the Medical Control Board; providing overall care and safe transportation of patients assigned to the crew by EMS Dispatch; understanding and adhering to clinical standards and performance criteria as set by the Medical Director; adhering to all probationary recommendations, remedial training recommendations, and suggestions for improvement of patient care and job standards; (when assigned as an Emergency Vehicle Operator) being responsible for and in control of the assigned ambulance at all times and in accordance with approved policy on safe and efficient ambulance operation; being responsible for the care, use, and appearance of assigned ambulance and equipment; being familiar with all equipment placement on unit and having a complete, accurate documented inventory of all equipment; reporting to assigned shift in a timely fashion as dictated by policy; being physically and mentally ready to respond to all calls within response time standards as dictated by policy; immediately reporting to appropriate authority any malfunctions and/or damage to any equipment or ambulances whether the crew was using or operating the equipment at the time of the damage or malfunction; submitting a verbal and written report of any injuries sustained to self, co-workers, or patients to appropriate authority and submitting to follow-up procedures as dictated by policy; following guidelines and standards as set forth by the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), and Exposure Control policies and procedures; supporting, properly interpreting, and implementing any policies, protocols, standard operating procedures, philosophies, or other directives as set forth by the Fire Department or other regulatory agencies; conforming to personal appearance standards; assisting in daily fire station duties when not engaged in emergency response; and participating in EMS-related Fire Department training and activities when not engaged in emergency response.

Summary:
The Emergency Medical Technician strives to achieve and maintain high levels of patient care and clinical performance. The medical and clinical performance standards will be in accordance with documented protocols, practices, and Medical Control Board directives; in the best medical interest of the patient and within the scope of practice for an EMT in the State of Oklahoma.
Primary Job Responsibilities:
Follow medical care practices as documented in EMSA medical protocols and as mandated by the Medical Control Board. The scope of medical practice will be confined to medical practice as defined by the Oklahoma Department of Health, unless otherwise specified by directives or protocols from the Medical Director.
Responsible for overall care and safe transportation of patients assigned to the crew by the System Status Controller. Will not turn patient care over to a Team Member or others who are less credentialed for the respective type of patient care needed per protocol.
Complete all documentation that relates to patient care and billing information on appropriate forms, in approved format, and turn in documentation as required.
Responsible for safe transport of patient to and from ambulance. This includes lifting of patient to and from a backboard, stretcher, or equivalent, and maneuvering patients past any obstacles encountered while moving the patient to the ambulance.
When assigned as an Emergency Vehicle Operator, will be responsible for and in control of the assigned ambulance at all times and in accordance with all federal, state and local laws that govern ambulance operation, and in accordance with approved company policy on safe and efficient ambulance operation.
Responsible for the care, use and appearance of assigned ambulance and equipment. Must be familiar with all equipment placement on unit and have an accurate documented inventory of all equipment.
Work Environment: While performing the duties of the job, the Team Member regularly works in outside weather conditions and is frequently exposed to wet and/or humid conditions including extreme cold and heat temperatures. The Team Member occasionally works near moving mechanical parts. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
Physical Requirements: While performing the duties of the job, the Team Member is regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. Must reach with hands and arms; and talk and hear. The Team Member is frequently required to sit, stand, and walk, and occasionally required to climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The Team Member must lift in conjunction with their partner or assist in moving and/or balance up to 250 pounds and occasionally lift, move and/or balance up to 350 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Ability to operate both the EMS vehicle and to assist others who are operating the EMS vehicle in a manner that enables arriving at the requested patient location in a safe and timely manner. Must maintain physical condition to enable proper performance of assigned job functions as determined by company policy.
Mental/Behavioral Skills: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations. Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide all units of measure. Must be able to problem solve and function in a high stress environment.

Minimum Requirements:
Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.
Obtain, and maintain Oklahoma motor vehicle operators license and stay within company guidelines.
Education and/or Experience:
High school diploma or general education degree (GED)
Certificate from college or technical school preferred
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
Obtain and maintain Oklahoma Department of Health EMT Certification.
Obtain and maintain National Registry Certification.

SUMMARY: Provide safe, quality basic emergency and non-emergency medical care and transportation under the guidelines of state protocols and MedRide OCCT standards of care. Maintain equipment and vehicles utilized in providing service.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Comply with established universal precautions and isolation procedures.
Assess patient's condition/complaints and carry out appropriate basic to advanced life support functions.
Clean interior and exterior of assigned unit daily.
Maintain patient confidentiality.
Follow MedRide OCCT guidelines for customer service.
Assess injuries and initiate appropriate treatment.
All aspects of patient movement including, but not limited to, lifting from the ground, lifting a patient while on the cot, lifting a patient in a stair chair, carrying a patient down steps in a stair chair or cot, moving patients from one surface to another (cot to bed, cot to bench seat, etc.).
Administer wound care and apply traction and/or splinting.
Read maps and route ambulance unit.
Transport patients to medical facilities.
Complete patient care reports and other related paperwork.
Stock medical equipment.
Gather patient billing information and appropriate billing signatures.
Complete daily report. Report mechanical problems to Maintenance Department and/or Supervisor.
Maintain the cleanliness of vehicle and area stations.
Comply with continuing education requirements and maintain all relevant
licenses, certifications and documents required for employment.
Maintain verbal contact with the Communications Center via two-way radio
regarding unit readiness, crew identities, location, etc.
Adhere to established pre-hospital, and interfacility care protocols.
Function as a public relations representative when dealing with facilities, agencies, etc.
Responsible for adhering to all company policies and procedures.

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
High school diploma or GED. Current state EMT license in Oklahoma (EMT-Basic or EMT-Intermediate or EMT-Paramedic) and be in good standing with state agencies. Current driver's license with acceptable driving record. Negative drug and alcohol screen. Pass physical & lifting requirements. Current BCLS, ACLS, PEPP or PALS, Health Provider level certification. Must be at least 18 years of age, prefer at least 21 years of age. Must complete a written & oral evaluation, psychomotor evaluation, and complete a field training evaluation period as part of the credential establishing process during the first 90 days of employment. Ability to locate hospitals and major medical facilities in the area, and ability to maintain effective communication skills with both co-workers, patients, patient families, and the personnel of hospitals and interacting agencies. Effective oral and written communications skills. Effective interpersonal skills.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
CCEMT-P. At least 1 year field medic experience. Additional certifications: PHTLS, ITLS, AMLS.

JOB SUMMARY
