Key Responsibilities:

Minimum Qualifications:
Education
Bachelor's Degree; Allied Health
License/Certification:
Registered by the Certification Nuclear Medicine Technological (CNMT) and/or American Registry of Radiological Technologists (ARRT).
Must meet, successfully complete, and maintain the CNMT/CT and/or ARRT certification
BLS certification.
Advanced CT licensure is required within one year with a 6 month grace period from date of hire.
The posted pay range is Boston Children's reasonable and good-faith expectation for this pay at the time of posting.

Under the direction of the RN circulator as dictated by the standards in the Medicare Conditions of Participation for surgical services, assists surgical teams during operative procedures in scrubbing for all physicians in assigned services. Arranges and inventories sterile set up for operations. Assists in preparing moving and positioning patients. I. Major Responsibilities:
1. Demonstrates independent functioning and proficiency in the scrub role in all cases in assigned specialty on an ongoing basis. Scrubs for all physicians in assigned service area, providing high quality evidenced-based clinical care with minimal supervision. Promotes teamwork within the team by formally precepting co-workers.
2. Prepares the Operating Room for cases. Selects and checks case cart and preference cards for correct instrument pan(s), packs, sterile supplies and additional items needed for the case.
3. Anticipates need for special equipment and supplies before procedure and requests it from the circulating nurse. Sets up back table and Mayo tray with instruments and supplies according to the procedure and surgeon preference card. Performs surgical count with circulating nurse according to UMMMC surgical count policy.
4. Responds to needs of surgeon and other team members. Assists operative team and anticipates needs of the surgeon and/or assistants during cases including the need for special equipment and supplies. Remains constantly observant of the operative field, recognizing emergency situations and performs emergency procedures as directed. Utilizes a variety of OR equipment such as microscopes, CUSA, steam sterilizers, suction, compressed air/gas, etc.
5. Passes and tracks instruments, sutures, and supplies during procedures. Labels all medication and solutions on sterile field. Monitors sponges, needles and instruments throughout the case. Cares for specimens to prevent loss or damage. Uses caution when handling specimens to ensure proper anatomical identification.

Job Duties and Performance Standards
Functions as a Surgical Technician in 5 of the 6 specialties demonstrating responsibilities that include assisting in direct patient care in the operating room.
Demonstrates appropriate aseptic technique, i.e. scrub, gown and glove, draping, counting and set up according to department policy
Selects and prepares the appropriate supplies and equipment for the surgical cases.
Operates all surgical equipment
Organizes instrumentation and the sterile field.
Anticipates needs of the surgeon, passes appropriate instruments, assists in exposure of the surgical field.
Performs all surgical counts consistently, including the “safety count”.
Performs wound closure (Subcutaneous and Skin) under the direct supervision of the surgeon.
Participates in general operating room activities to create a highly effective team.
Participates in PI activities, continuing education, planning and orientation of new personnel, and emergency preparedness.
Demonstrates an awareness of the needs of the department and the assigned rooms and or tasks.
