City/State Suffolk, VA Work Shift Third (Nights) Sentara Obici Hospital is hiring a Patient Care Tech (PCT)for a full-time, night shift position in Suffolk, VA on our Medical/Surgical Unit! Hours:7PM to 7AM. Three 12-hour shifts (36-hours per week), with rotating weekends.
Department/Position Overview:
Join a unit known for its great teamwork! This general med/surg unit has great engagement within the nursing team and the patient population is mostly surgical patients. Sentara Obici Hospital is a recognized Primary Stroke Center and Magnet hospital. PCT staff will see between 8 and 12 patient ratio on the unit.

Patient Care Techniciansare unlicensed staff members who are accountable to, and work under the direct supervision of a professional nurse to implement delegated aspects of nursing care. Provide patient care, support the admissions and discharge process, and comply with patient safety practices under the direction of the professional nurse. Observe patients' physical, mental, and emotional conditions and report any change to the nursing.
Education:
HS - High School Grad or Equivalent
One of the following programs: Sentara Care Partner Certification Program, successful completion of the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA), National Certified Medical Assistant (NCMA), National Patient Care Technician (NCPCT), completion of US Navy Hospital Corps School, Emergency Services to include EMR, EMS, EMT, AEMT and Paramedic, or current student enrolled in a clinical program having completed at least one semester of a (RN, LPN, RT or PT) or current work experience within last three years as a PCT or Nursing Assistant.
Certifications/Licensure:
AHA BLS certification within 90 days of hire.

Job Overview:

In the operatingroom, you will have frequent exposure to blood or body fluid, medicinal preparations, and other conditions common to a surgical operatingroom environment. In the clinic, you may be assisting surgeons in local procedures and working directly with the patients before and after surgery. Work shifts will be four 10-hour days. Surgery days typically begin at 7:00 am. Must be flexible to work in both our Newport News and Williamsburg locations.
Responsibilities:
Know the name, use and location of medications, supplies and equipment used in the operatingroom, recovery room, the instrument processing areas and storage.
Familiar with the use of sterilizer, ultrasonic instrument cleaner, operatingroom table, lifts and lights, cautery unit, microscope, laser, suction, crash cart, EKG monitor, defibrillator, washer/dryer etc.
Familiar with organizational policies and procedures.
Ensure regular operatingroom and recovery room equipment maintenance and servicing, according to established policies.
Understand the duties of the surgeon, the anesthesiologist, the circulating nurse and the support staff, within the organization.
Understand all duties and functions of the pre/post-operative nurse, recovery room nurse, circulating nurse, and scrub nurse technician, sterilization.
Ensure compliance with regulations and the facility's standards of quality patient care.
Assist in the operatingroom set-up with the necessary supplies and equipment for each surgical procedure.
Assist in the operatingroom clean-up and decontamination after each surgery.
Handle and dispose of Biomedical Waste according to policies and procedures.
Process and send specimens to the lab.
Maintain sterile field and technique during surgical procedure.
Ensure instruments/terminal are properly cleaned
Assist physician during surgery. Ensure a smooth flow in the operatingroom.
Assist with patient care in the clinical setting to include but not limited to, assisting with local procedures, answering patient questions, and rooming patients in the clinic setting.

SUMMARY
Ability to assist in surgical operations under the supervision of Surgeons, Registered Nurses and Surgical Assistants. Assists in the organization and daily function of the operatingroom in accordance with established Federal, State and accreditation standards and company policies and procedures. Assists the Nurses and Surgeons in delivering the highest standard of patient care available.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
To perform the job successfully, an individual should demonstrate the following competencies:
Performs their duties in an ethical and legal manner within the scope of their certification.
Ability to scrub all types of cases performed at the company.
Ability to anticipate the needs of the surgeon and has equipment, medical gases and supplies readily available for all procedures.
Has the ability to adhere to work schedule, be organized, manage time effectively and in a cost effective manner.
Participates in continuing education/in-service training as needed, staff meetings, and Q.A.P.I. program.
Actively participates in the development of a healthy work environment.
Assists in orientation of new staff when needed.
Knowledge of central and sterile supply department.
Opens all sterile packs according to sterile technique and prepares instruments as needed.
Helps prepare operatingroom by setting up surgical instruments; ensuring equipment works properly, labels sterile solutions.
Helps gather supplies and equipment in the room.
Maintains record on field of medication used intra-operatively, specimens retrieved, tissue implanted, implants, liquids or chemicals on field.
Passes instruments and other sterile supplies to surgical assistants.
May hold retractors, cut suture, help count sponges, needles or blades if applicable.
Prepares, cares for and dispose specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
Ability to operate sterilizer, lights, suction, and other operatingroom equipment/ diagnostic equipment.
Assists in patient transfer to PACU, if needed. Helps clean and restock operatingroom.
Assists with any technical function under supervision of system to carry out a safe operation.
Ability to prep, drape and position the patient for surgery.
Prepares for case according to surgeon's preference card.
Gathers supplies needed and anticipates needs for case.
Needs manual dexterity to handle instruments.
Must be emotionally conscientious, orderly, and emotionally stable to handle the OR environment.
QUALIFICATIONS
Ability prioritize, plan, and implement patient care within the scope of their practice.
Ability to handle stress associated with prioritizing multiple tasks.
Above average organization skills.
Able to effectively work within a team.
Complies with HIPAA regulations.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Minimum Required: High School diploma or GED
Minimum Required: Two (2) years of hospital main operatingroom experience preferred
LICENSES AND CREDENTIALS
Minimum Required: Certification as a Surgical Technician preferred
Minimum Required: Basic Life Support (BLS) required
SYSTEMS AND TECHNOLOGY
Proficient in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook

PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This role requires a variety of physical activities to effectively perform essential job functions. The position involves frequent walking (75%), sitting (50%), and standing (50%), with regular bending, stooping, and reaching (25-50%). Employees must be able to lift, carry, push, and pull items up to 25 lbs. Strong fine motor skills and full use of hands are essential, as the role demands constant grasping, writing/typing, and use of technology. Visual and auditory acuity-including color, depth, peripheral vision, and the ability to adjust focus-is required 100% of the time. Occasional driving or climbing may also be necessary.
